Shift Communications, founded in 2003, is a multinational firm owned by National Group in Canada as of May 2016. National Group, in turn, is owned by RES Publica, and WPP, the world’s largest communications conglomerate, owns a minority share in RES. Shift’s headquarters are in San Francisco with additional offices in Boston, New York, and Austin.
Some of their largest clients include Club Med, Bing, The Home Depot, Logitech, Virgin Mobile, and Oakley. Their CEO, Todd Defren writes a blog — PR-Squared — that is often listed among AdAge’s top 50 blogs. They also have the Shift Blog on their website with regular updates.
One of their big claims to fame: they were the first PR firm to launch a press release on social media in 2006. They were also among the first PR firms to start blogs. In 2015, they became a Google Analytics Certified Partner, adding more value to what they bring to the table for their clients and helping them understand the ROI of marcomms work.
Shift was co-founded by Jim Joyal, Ed Weiler (Weiler is no longer with the agency), and Todd Defren, and their annual revenues are currently about $20 million currently. In their four office locations they currently have 150 employees and in 2014 they won a total of 53 industry awards. They specialize in working with healthcare, technology, consumer marketing, and B2B clients providing data-driven marketing and results.
Many employees talk about the great company culture, but also advise that it is not a fit for everyone; they use a silo system for their work product.
