Google Android ranked as the top smartphone platform in the US, with 41.8 percent market share, according to a recent report from the comScore MobiLens service, and this is just one of the findings. Apple only owns 27.0 percent of the smartphone market, while RIM ranked third with 21.7 percent share. Sure, Microsoft and Symbian are in the cards as well, but their market shares are lower than expected, with 5.7 percent and 1.9 percent respectively.
The news cannot be positive for Apple, especially after Jobs stepped down as the company’s chief executive. But then again, Apple’s empire doesn’t rely solely on the smartphone. There are other innovations holding the top of the market share, and it is hard to imagine them dethroned by competitors, considering that Apple holds patents and exclusive rights to most of them. But Apple failed to be one of the top three OEMs this quarter, leaving the top positions to Samsung, LG and Motorola, when the smartphone industry is pretty important, considering the mobile content usage statistics, released by the same comScore MobiLens service.
According to this, in July, 70 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, while browsers were used by 41.1 percent of subscribers. Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 2.1 percentage points to 30.1 percent of mobile subscribers. Basically every niche of mobile content usage raised up, which is a trend marketers cannot possibly ignore.
