In the wake of the monster revelations about Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, other people started coming forward and naming names. Few people expected one of those names to be celebrated star of stage and screen Kevin Spacey. And yet there it is, in countless headlines thanks to a claim made by actor Anthony Rapp. Speaking to BuzzFeed, Rapp said Spacey made a sexual advance at him at a party back in 1986, when Rapp was only 14, and Spacey was 26. According to Rapp, as reported to BuzzFeed, Spacey… “picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold… And then he lays down on top of me…”
Some doubted Rapp’s story, asking why he waited so long to come forward. Others in the industry did not seem shocked by the news. Then, as with similar allegations, another person came forward. This time it was Daniel Beal, who was working at a hotel when he was “approached” by Spacey. The barman, Beal, said Spacey waited for him to go on break, followed him outside and revealed himself to Beal.
The hotel employee said he just went back inside and tried to stay away from Spacey, who, he said, was pretty drunk.
Now, Spacey’s publicist is saying the actor is in the process of getting help: “Kevin Spacey is taking the time necessary to seek evaluation and treatment… No other information is available at this time.”
Spacey, however, is talking, at least, he’s tweeting. The actor released an apology, saying he doesn’t remember the incident with Rapp, but he’s sorry if it happened … “…if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”
Spacey went on to divulge that he’s gay. That announcement touched off another round of angry criticism from people who said Spacey should not conflate homosexuality with assault. Now the actor is facing allegations of sexual assault and of trying to compare being gay with assaulting teen boys. So, no, that ill-advised apology definitely did not help his cause.
After taking bad and making it worse, the actor is left to wonder what to do next to begin picking up the pieces. Fans are split, with some sticking up for him, saying this is all a sham allegation. Meanwhile, others are insisting there must be more victims out there who have been afraid to come forward. One thing is certain, this story is not done.
