It’s no secret that sports teams are helping promote breast cancer awareness, but one of the more recent events was the “Dig Pink” volleyball match on the 22. The Pepperdine Volleyball Team raised over $800 during the match.
The “Dig Pink” campaign is something that NCAA women’s volleyball programs have worked together on for several years now. They accept donations during the special pink matches and then donate the funds raised to the Side-Out Foundation, a not for profit organization that works to help the doctors and nurses that treat men and women affected by cancer. The organization is looking to increase the quality of life and treatment for those stricken with cancer.
On Oct. 22, Pepperdine played against San Francisco in Firestone Fieldhouse, raising close to a grand through donations that were made throughout the match.
“This year’s Dig Pink event was the most successful so far,” says Kevin Borzenski, athletic events coordinator at Pepperdine. “Not only did we raise more money this year than we ever have for breast cancer research, but the Pepperdine students, including the women’s volleyball team, took more initiative in this event than ever before.”
Spectators were asked to show up in pink, with the first 100 students receiving free pink t-shirts. There were other methods of encouraging donations. For example, anyone who donated was given a pink Waves rally towel. Those donating over $10 received a mini pink volleyball and the top four donations had their balls signed by the volleyball team. Overall, the teams enjoyed themselves and raised money for an excellent cause.
