Republican Mayors in Democratic State – California, How do they do it?
Here’s something you may never have guessed, especially if you’ve just been looking at national politics for the last several years, from the 100 largest U.S. cities, 27 of them have Republican mayors (so they are in the minority nationwide). But out of those 27, seven of them are in California. More than any other state has currently. That’s a good trick for a state with three times as many Democrats as Republicans.
Of these, the highest on the list is San Diego mayor, Kevin Faulconer. San Diego is among the 10 largest cities in the country. Faulconer got elected during a special election after the former mayor resigned facing at least a dozen allegations of sexual assault, but Faulconer, who worked at NCG Porter Novelli for many years before entering the public sector, still managed to win 52% of the vote. Many feel it was because of his efforts to engage with the people of the community. His campaign headquarters was set up in the middle of a predominantly black neighborhood, and when meeting with Latino groups, he addressed them in Spanish. His plan worked.
