The academic integrity question in the age of generative AI is no longer "should students be permitted to use AI." That question has been answered by reality — students use AI broadly, faculty practice varies widely, detection technology is unreliable, and institutional policy lags both. The real question is how institutions construct academic integrity frameworks that survive the new environment.
The four academic integrity postures institutions have adopted
1. Prohibition. AI use prohibited on academic work absent explicit faculty permission. Enforcement-heavy. Detection-dependent. Often fails because detection is unreliable.
2. Universal permission. AI use permitted broadly. Often fails because students learn to outsource thinking rather than learn with AI assistance.
3. Faculty discretion. Individual faculty members set AI policy for their courses. Most common posture. Produces inconsistent student experience and uneven institutional standards.
4. Tiered framework. Institutional policy establishes principles (e.g., disclosure required, certain assessment types AI-prohibited, learning objectives drive policy). Faculty implement within the principles. Most defensible long-term posture.
What the tiered framework requires
Institutional principles. A documented framework defining AI use principles, disclosure requirements, prohibited contexts, and student rights and responsibilities.
Course-level policy. Every syllabus carries an AI policy aligned with institutional principles. Specific to the course's learning objectives and assessment design.
Disclosure mechanisms. Students disclose AI use. Standard formats. Standard expectations.
Assessment redesign. Where AI use is permitted, assessment redesigned to measure learning rather than output production. Process documentation, oral examination, in-class assessment, project-based learning.
Due process protections. Academic integrity cases involving AI receive due process protections appropriate to the consequences. Detection technology is not sufficient evidence on its own.
Faculty training. Continuous. Practical. Scenario-based. Faculty cannot implement what they have not been trained on.
What detection technology cannot do
AI detection products produce false positives and false negatives at rates that make them unreliable as sole evidence in academic integrity cases. Institutions that rely on detection as primary evidence face due process challenges, faculty backlash, and student grievance.
Detection has a role as one signal among many — alongside writing style change, in-class assessment, oral examination, draft history, and other evidence. It cannot replace the broader framework.
What works
Clarity. Institutional principles, course policy, student expectations — all clearly articulated and consistently applied.
Assessment design. Assessments designed to measure learning rather than output. Where output can be produced by AI, assessment must measure something else.
Faculty alignment. Faculty practice aligned with institutional principles. Cross-departmental consistency on core questions.
Student engagement. Students understand the framework, the rationale, the expectations. Cultural alignment, not just policy enforcement.
Due process. Academic integrity cases proceed through documented protocols with appropriate evidence standards.
The institutions that have built this framework navigate the AI-era academic integrity question as an ongoing operating discipline. The institutions running prohibition-and-detection postures face escalating faculty discontent, student grievance, and reputational damage as cases produce embarrassing outcomes.
