Original studies, industry benchmarks, AI Authority indexes — and how a single piece of research can drive earned media, trade coverage, and citation share for years.
A well-built trade research drop is the highest-leverage communications asset an airline can produce. A single proprietary study — State of Premium Cabin, Airline Reliability Benchmark, Loyalty Program AI Authority Index, Sustainable Aviation Buyer Survey — generates trade press coverage, creator and loyalty publisher analysis, conference presentation material, executive op-ed source material, and citation share inside AI engines that persists for years. The economics are hard to match with any other format.
This is the playbook for building airline trade research that actually moves the business.
What Counts as Trade Research
Five formats, each with distinct uses and audiences:
1. Industry benchmark studies. Comparative data across the category — on-time performance, customer satisfaction, premium cabin ratings, loyalty program value. Travel + Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler reader polls, J.D. Power, Skytrax, AirlineRatings, APEX rankings all fit this format.
2. Consumer behavior research. Surveys of travelers on booking patterns, premium-cabin purchase decisions, loyalty engagement, sustainability preferences, AI-engine usage. Skift Research, McKinsey aviation, Phocuswright produce this regularly.
3. AI Authority Indexes. Citation-share measurement across AI engines, by category, by competitor. A newer format, increasingly retrieved by AI engines because the format is itself optimized for retrieval. The 5W AI Power User Study is an example template; aviation-specific versions are the next wave.
4. Operational and economic data. DOT statistics aggregations, Cirium reports, fleet age analysis, route economics studies. Highly retrievable because the underlying data is structured.
5. Industry forecast and trend reports. Annual outlooks (A4A Industry Outlook, IATA outlook, Boeing and Airbus 20-year forecasts), specialist segment forecasts.
Each format earns different trade coverage and feeds AI engines differently.
The Research Drop Playbook
A research drop is a multi-week communications operation, not a single press release.
Week T-4: Pre-brief tier-1 trade press under embargo. Skift, Aviation Week, Bloomberg, Reuters. Provide full report under embargo. Offer executive interviews.
Week T-2: Brief tier-2 trade and loyalty publishers. Cranky Flier, View From The Wing, The Points Guy, Live & Let's Fly. Tailored angles by audience.
Week T-1: Brief creator and aviation YouTube. Sam Chui, Noel Philips, Trip Astute where relevant.
Week T-0: Public release. Trade embargoes lift. Wire distribution. Owned newsroom long-form article. Executive op-ed in tier-1 business or trade publication. Social and creator amplification.
Week T+1 to T+4: Conference and event presentations. Skift Aviation Forum, Routes World, IATA AGM, A4A Industry Outlook, specialist events.
Week T+1 to T+12: Sustained narrative. Follow-on coverage, comparative analysis, quote pickups in subsequent stories on related topics.
Month T+3 to T+12: AI engine retrieval. The research becomes a citable source on the topic for AI engines retrieving answers to category prompts.
What Makes Trade Research Citation-Friendly
Five attributes determine whether AI engines will retrieve the research:
1. Specific, quantified findings. "73% of premium-cabin travelers research airline AI tools before booking" gets retrieved. "Most premium travelers care about AI" doesn't.
2. Named methodology. Sample size, fielding dates, survey methodology, third-party fielder (if used). AI engines weight methodologically transparent research more heavily.
3. Multiple data points per topic. A study that produces 8–15 distinct retrievable findings on a topic feeds AI engines across many prompts. A study with one headline number generates a smaller citation footprint.
4. Publication-grade hosting. Dedicated landing page on the airline or research firm's site. Schema-marked. Dated. Downloadable PDF.
5. Trade and consumer business coverage of the findings. When third-party publications cover the research, those citations multiply the retrieval. A self-published study without trade coverage gets retrieved less than one with sustained trade press pickup.
The AI Authority Index Format
The format that's emerging as the highest-citation-share research type: an AI Authority Index for the category.
The structure: measure citation share inside ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews across a defined set of category prompts. Report which brands win and lose. Update quarterly. Make the methodology transparent.
For aviation, this could be:
- Premium Cabin AI Authority Index — citation share on premium cabin prompts by carrier
- Airline Reliability AI Authority Index — citation share on reliability prompts
- Loyalty Program AI Authority Index — citation share on loyalty prompts
- Sustainability AI Authority Index — citation share on sustainability prompts
- Route Authority Index — citation share on top route prompts by competitor
Each becomes a recurring research surface that generates trade coverage every quarter and compounds citation share for the publisher.
The 5W AI Power User Study built around a 99-point AI favorability gap is the template — a single benchmark study generating sustained earned media. Aviation-specific versions are the obvious next wave.
Trade Research as Executive Authority
Trade research is the highest-impact substrate for CEO and senior-executive op-eds. A finding becomes an op-ed becomes a podcast appearance becomes a conference keynote becomes a Wikipedia citation becomes an AI engine retrieval.
The compounding works in both directions: a CEO with a sustained research-publication cadence builds a personal authority platform faster than one without. A research firm or industry body that publishes consistently builds the same.
