Citation Share is the percentage of AI engine responses about your category that name your institution, link to your sources, or quote your faculty. It is the single most important reputation metric universities are not yet tracking.

Pageviews measure traffic. Media mentions measure attention. Rankings measure prestige. Citation Share measures the only thing that matters in 2026 — whether a prospective student, parent, reporter, donor, or peer faculty member asking an AI engine about your category gets your name back in the answer.

How to calculate it

Define the category prompts your audiences actually use. "Best engineering schools in California." "Top MBA programs for entrepreneurship." "Universities with strong climate science research." "Colleges with the highest job placement rates."

Run each prompt across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Record which institutions are named. Score yourself as a percentage of total possible mentions across the prompt set and engine set.

A flagship public university targeting the engineering category should expect Citation Share above 40%. A regional comprehensive should benchmark against peers in its state. A liberal arts college should benchmark against the consortium it competes with for applicants.

Why it matters more than ranking

U.S. News rankings update once a year. Citation Share updates daily — every time a model refreshes its index, every time a new piece of earned media gets published, every time Wikipedia gets edited.

It is also the metric closest to the actual decision moment. Prospective students do not consult U.S. News before they consult ChatGPT. Reporters do not consult U.S. News before they consult Perplexity. Citation Share is the reputation reading at the moment of inquiry.

Three inputs move Citation Share faster than anything else.

Tier-1 earned media. A Forbes feature, a Wall Street Journal op-ed by a faculty member, an Atlantic longform — these generate citations across every major AI engine within weeks.

Wikipedia and Wikidata accuracy. LLMs weight Wikipedia disproportionately. A university Wikipedia page that is thin, outdated, or factually weak depresses Citation Share across every engine simultaneously.

Structured .edu content. Fact-rich, schema-tagged, well-linked pages on your own domain feed the models. Most universities have not optimized their websites for this.

The benchmark to track

Track Citation Share quarterly. Track it across at least 25 category prompts. Track it across all five major engines. Report it to the cabinet alongside enrollment, retention, fundraising, and ranking.

This is the new front-page metric for institutional reputation. Universities that build the measurement habit in 2026 will compound visibility for the next decade. Those that wait will spend the same decade explaining to boards why their AI-era reputation is invisible.
