Jay Alves, Colorado Rockies’ vice president of communications/public relations, has won the 2010 Robert O. Fishel Award for Public Relations Excellence. The Fishel Award, named after the longtime baseball executive, is awarded to an “active, non-uniformed representative of Major League Baseball whose ethics, character, dedication, service, professionalism and humanitarianism best represent the standards propounded by Robert O. Fishel.”
Jay Alves has been working with the Rockies for 13 seasons and has been a part of the Major League Baseball for a total of 29 seasons. He joined the Colorado team in October 1997 and was promoted to vice president in January 2005. In his 13 years with the Rockies, Alves has directed all of the club’s media relations efforts, including the PR and communication campaign for the 1998 All-Star Game at Coors Field hosted by the franchise and for its first World Series appearance in 2007. Along with managing the Rockies’ PR efforts, Alves sometimes subs as a color analyst for Rockies games on FOX Sports Net.
Alves adventure with baseball has started 29 years ago with the Oakland Athletics in 1981, his first job being a marketing positions which he held for three years, followed by another three years as the clubs assistant director of scouting. He also server as Oakland’s director of baseball information for nine years, period that included the team’s three consecutive World Series appearances from 1988-1990 and the 1989 World Series Championship.
Fishel Award nominations are made by representatives of the 30 Major League Clubs and league officials. To determine the winner, the nominees receive the votes of active past winners and the leadership of the BBWAA.
