Your smartphone is an almost limitless personal brand marketing tool. If you are one of the infinitesimally small percentage of people actually getting the most out of your smartphone, congratulations. But if you are not actively using your smartphone to make the media come to you, then you are missing out on a prime mobile marketing opportunity.
One of the worst mistakes a person can make is allowing their smartphone to be an information source without implementing it as a marketing tool. Think about it, how many times do you see people engrossed in their smartphones, taking in all sorts of information about all sorts of things … but never adding anything to the conversation.
What if you built a habit into your routine, a habit that freed you to flip the script. Instead of using your smartphone to take in information, use it to dispense your perspective or information. If you have a moment of inspiration, share it. If you learn something new, express it. If something pops up on your feed, don’t allow yourself to be snarky, petty or silly. Get serious. Be positive…ADD something to the exchange allowing that person or people following the thread to be happier because you are around.
Seem simple? Never underestimate the power of emotional connection. When you can turn an interaction – ANY interaction – into a positive deposit into someone else’s emotional tank, there is incredible power in that exchange. Sadly, most people go about their lives without ever proactively implementing that simple, highly beneficial strategy.
And that’s just the first step. If you want the media to pay attention to you or your brand, give them a reason to. Stop waiting for press opportunities and start bringing the news to you. Put content out there that people want to connect with, information about pertinent and newsworthy aspects of whatever you’re good at or understand. Instead of sending out releases and begging the media to pay attention to you, put out content that NO ONE can ignore.
No one is stopping you from creating compelling, interesting and relevant content RIGHT NOW but YOU. That machine in your pocket is a multimedia marketing tool the likes of which the world has never seen before now…but you only use it to check Facebook and play Words With Friends. That’s like using a Stradivarius to play chopsticks. It’s cute for a while, but, sooner or later, you have to get serious…or put it down.
