The agentic primitive. The foundation every browser agent and desktop automation tool builds on.
Anthropic Computer Use is Claude's ability to operate a computer directly — viewing the screen, clicking, typing, and completing tasks across software. The foundational primitive behind much of the AI agent ecosystem.
What it does
Computer Use turns Claude into an agent that can drive any piece of software through its actual UI. The model receives screenshots, identifies what is on screen, and outputs actions: click coordinates, type strings, scroll, switch applications. The loop runs until the task completes — or until Claude decides the next action would be unsafe.
Anthropic released the capability in 2024. It was the first production-grade computer-use AI shipped by a frontier lab. Every browser agent, every desktop automation product, every “AI does the thing” demo since traces back to this primitive. OpenAI followed with Operator; Google followed with its own variant. Neither has matched Anthropic on accuracy or reasoning depth.
Key features
- Screen vision plus structured action output
- Multi-step task planning
- Available through the Claude API
- Multi-OS support — Linux, macOS, Windows desktop environments and any browser
- Safety guardrails and refusal behavior on dangerous actions
- Continuous improvement — accuracy benchmarks have climbed across every Claude release
Pricing
Pay-as-you-go via the Anthropic API. Token-based pricing scales with the Claude model used (Haiku, Sonnet, Opus). Verify current rates at docs.anthropic.com.
Common use cases
- “Fill out this expense report from the receipts in this folder.”
- “Book the flight that matches these constraints on the corporate travel portal.”
- “Extract the invoice numbers from this vendor portal that has no API.”
- “Migrate these records from the old CRM to the new one.”
- “Run this QA test plan across the staging environment.”
- “Build a research dossier on this company — LinkedIn, Crunchbase, the company site, recent news.”

Integrations
Used by leading agent companies as a core capability. Integrated alongside MCP servers in production agent stacks. The Claude API makes Computer Use available to any developer.
Alternatives
OpenAI Operator, Google's screen-control variants, and browser-use as the leading open-source option. The EPR MCP Server Directory and the EPR AI Agents Directory both treat Computer Use as foundational infrastructure rather than a server in the traditional sense.

EPR editorial verdict
Computer Use is the agentic primitive. Every browser agent, every desktop automation tool, every “AI does the thing” demo this year traces back to the capability Anthropic shipped first. Other labs followed; none caught up on accuracy or reasoning depth. The foundation everything else builds on.
EPR rating: 9.3/10.
