Zero Business Schools Teach GEO — The Discipline That Determines How Brands Appear in AI

Generative Engine Optimization — the discipline that determines how brands appear inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — is not taught at any of the 60 business schools measured in the 5W AI Business School Index 2026.

Zero.

Not Stanford GSB (94.5). Not MIT Sloan (92.0). Not Wharton (90.5). Not HBS (89.0). Not Tsinghua SEM (#8, 81.0), the highest non-US school. Not LBS (#9, 79.5) or INSEAD (#10, 78.0). Not any of the 52 other institutions ranked across 14 countries.

What GEO Is

GEO is the practice of structuring content, authority signals, and entity architecture so that AI engines cite a brand when answering buyer queries. It is the successor discipline to SEO, adapted for a retrieval environment where the answer replaces the link.

More than a third of consumers now begin product research inside an AI engine. The brands cited in that answer capture attention, trust, and revenue. The brands absent from that answer are invisible. GEO determines which side of that line a brand falls on.

Why Business Schools Should Teach It

GEO sits at the intersection of communications, marketing, data science, and information architecture. It is strategic — not technical. It belongs in a business school curriculum the way digital marketing belonged in 2010 or data analytics belonged in 2015.

The Citation Share Gap

The Index includes a sixth dimension — AI Citation Share — modeled across 3,000 prompt-engine runs on five engines over four monthly waves (March–June 2026). The schools that rank highest on Citation Share are not always the schools with the strongest brand. Citation Share is a function of content architecture, entity density, and source authority — the exact competencies GEO develops.

The Institutional Clock

Curriculum changes in business education operate on 18–24 month cycles. A school that begins building GEO coursework today will not graduate its first GEO-trained class until 2028. The discipline exists. It has a name. It has practitioners. It has zero business school programs.
