What the Hospitals & Health Systems Audit Measures
The Citation Share Report evaluated 25 US hospitals, selected based on inclusion in the 2025-2026 US News Best Hospitals Honor Roll, plus four leading specialty institutions (MSK, MD Anderson, Boston Children's, CHOP) and Vanderbilt. Researchers ran more than 60 healthcare prompts across six categories through ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, then modeled a directional Citation Share from cross-engine knowledge synthesis with primary-source verification, using the EPR Citation Share five-component formula. Honor Roll status was verified against US News Best Hospitals 2025-2026, released July 29, 2025.
The study drew on a defined set of retrieval anchors, including US News & World Report Best Hospitals, Newsweek World's Best Hospitals, Healthgrades, Wikipedia, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, NIH funding databases, Becker's Hospital Review, Modern Healthcare, NYT Health, STAT News, NPR Health, CMS Hospital Compare, Castle Connolly Top Doctors, the NCI-Designated Cancer Center list, and each hospital's own .edu, .org, and .com properties.
Why Houston Methodist Ranks #17
Houston Methodist holds Honor Roll status in the 2025-2026 US News Best Hospitals rankings, the qualifying criterion for inclusion in the study. Its Citation Share Index score of 52 places it in the middle of the 25-institution leaderboard, above Rush University Medical Center (#18, 49) and below Mount Sinai (#16, 55).
The index identifies factors that separate the top of the leaderboard from the middle and bottom. According to the study, the original Honor Roll heavyweights (Mayo, Cleveland Clinic, Hopkins, Mass General, UCLA, UCSF, and NewYork-Presbyterian) command more than 60% of all "best hospital" citation share, despite US News alphabetizing the Honor Roll. Mayo Clinic tops the index at #1 with a score of 100, followed by Cleveland Clinic at #2 with 96.
The index also identifies five signals that move citation share: US News specialty ranking elevation, named-physician programs, condition-explainer content depth, Newsweek global ranking inclusion, and NIH/NCI designation surfacing. It further names four shared weaknesses that drive low citation share at the bottom of the leaderboard: no named-specialty leadership, weak owned-content libraries, geographic asymmetry away from major coastal media markets, and no Newsweek dual-anchoring.
Houston Methodist's own recognition record centers on its US News standing. According to the health system, US News & World Report has named Houston Methodist Hospital the Best Hospital in Texas for 14 years in a row and recognized it on the Honor Roll nine times.
