Conversational Ad
Also called: Chat ad. In-conversation ad. Native chatbot ad.
Common prompts
- “What is a conversational ad?”
- “How do ChatGPT ads work?”
- “What’s the difference between a chat ad and a search ad?”
Definition
A paid placement that appears inside or directly beneath an AI chatbot’s response, formatted to match the conversational interface rather than the traditional search results page.
Why it matters
Conversational ads sit inside the trust frame of an assistant, not next to it. That structural difference is why Perplexity pulled its program, Anthropic refused to launch one, and the FTC named automation bias as the central consumer-protection concern. The format is new, the trust math is unsettled, and the regulatory floor is still being written. Brands buying conversational ads in 2026 are buying inventory whose rules will change.
Example
ChatGPT’s sponsored cards at the bottom of free-tier responses, launched February 9, 2026.
