Proactive vs. Reactive PR

Proactive PR is planned outreach that creates news on the organization's own timeline, while reactive PR responds to outside events, questions or crises.

Balanced programs do both. Research, launches and thought leadership are proactive. Newsjacking, rapid-response commentary and crisis statements are reactive. Reactive work depends on preparation done in advance: approved messages, trained spokespeople and a current media list.
