Sponsored Answer

A response from an AI engine where the answer itself — not a labeled ad slot — has been influenced by paid placement. The line no major platform admits crossing.

Also called: Paid response. Promoted answer.

Common prompts

  • “What is a sponsored answer?”
  • “Can a chatbot’s answer be paid?”

Definition

A response from an AI engine where the content of the answer itself — not a clearly separated ad slot — has been influenced by paid placement.

Why it matters

No major AI platform has confirmed selling sponsored answers in 2026. All current pilots — OpenAI, Microsoft Copilot, Meta — claim ads sit next to or below the answer, not inside it. The category exists primarily as a fear in the consumer mind and a risk in the regulatory frame. Senator Markey’s letter and the FTC’s automation-bias guidance both implicitly target the day the line gets crossed.

Example

No confirmed deployments. Thrad has been accused of mechanics that approach it.
