Trust Tax
Also called: Credibility cost. Integrity discount.
Common prompts
- “What is the trust tax in AI advertising?”
- “Why are ads costly for chatbot platforms?”
Definition
The unbudgeted cost an AI platform pays — in user retention, engagement, or perceived neutrality — when it introduces advertising into a previously ad-free assistant experience.
Why it matters
The trust tax does not appear on the platform’s revenue line. It shows up later — in churn, in second-guessing, in the cultural framing competitors weaponize. Anthropic’s Super Bowl campaign was an explicit attempt to raise OpenAI’s trust tax. Perplexity’s reversal was an admission that the trust tax exceeded the ad revenue. The trust tax is the most important unmeasured number in the LLM ad wars.
Example
Perplexity’s exit, February 2026.
