AI Girlfriend Marketing: Inside a Fast Growing App Category

AI girlfriend marketing is the set of positioning, creator and pricing tactics that companion apps such as Replika and Character.AI use to turn free users into paying subscribers. Appfigures counted 337 revenue-generating AI companion apps in August 2025, and TechCrunch reported the category was on track for more than $120 million in 2025 consumer spending. This guide covers the marketing and PR moves behind that growth.

How Big Is the AI Girlfriend App Category?

Appfigures counted 337 active, revenue-generating AI companion apps worldwide in August 2025, and 128 of them were released in 2025. The data, reported by TechCrunch on August 12, 2025, defines a companion app as one where the user talks with premade or user-generated characters designed to embody a personality.

The same data shows how quickly the category grew. AI companion apps earned $82 million in the first half of 2025 and were on track for more than $120 million by year-end, and consumer spending reached $221 million as of July 2025. Downloads reached 220 million as of July 2025, with 60 million in the first half of the year, up 88% from the same period in 2024. Revenue per download rose from $0.52 in 2024 to $1.18 in 2025.

Two details matter for marketers. The top 10% of apps generated 89% of the category's revenue, and about 33 apps had passed $1 million in lifetime consumer spending. Appfigures also found that 17% of active apps had the word "girlfriend" in the app name, compared with 4% for "boyfriend" or "fantasy." Other firms publish much larger market-size figures that do not use the same definition, so this guide uses Appfigures' app store data throughout, as TechCrunch's report on the data presents it.

Which Apps Lead the AI Girlfriend Category and How Do They Sell?

Replika, Character.AI and the companions inside xAI's Grok lead the public conversation, with PolyBuzz and Chai also named by TechCrunch among popular apps. Each one sells a different promise, and the table shows how the positioning, business model and marketing lever differ.

Replika describes itself on its careers site as "an AI companion who is eager to learn," and the same site says more than 35 million users have joined. Character.AI's founder, Noam Shazeer, returned to Google in 2024, TechCrunch reported, and the app still has tens of millions of monthly active users. xAI added AI companions to Grok in July 2025, including an anime-style character named Ani, according to TechCrunch and Decrypt.

How Do AI Companion Apps Acquire and Keep Users?

Companion apps use five repeatable tactics: names that match search terms, creator partnerships, a free tier with a paid unlock, bundling inside an existing subscription, and large character libraries. Each is visible in public sources.

Naming for search intent is the clearest. Appfigures' finding that 17% of apps put "girlfriend" in the name shows developers choosing the word shoppers type into app stores. Replika takes the brand route instead: its job listings for a Head of Brand and an Influencer Marketing Manager describe owning the global brand narrative and running paid and organic creator partnerships across TikTok and YouTube.

The business model rewards early attachment. A free tier lets a user build a relationship with a character before any payment, and paid tiers unlock extras such as voice and richer personalities. Appfigures' revenue-per-download figure of $1.18 in 2025, up from $0.52, suggests the paid conversion is improving across the category.

Bundling is the route large platforms take. xAI placed its companions inside Grok for subscribers, so the companion adds value to a subscription the user already pays for. Character libraries work the other way, because users create characters that give the app new content without the company writing it.

How Are New Rules Changing AI Companion Marketing?

The Federal Trade Commission, California and Character.AI itself moved in 2025 to put age limits and disclosure into the way companion apps are sold. These steps give marketers a clear set of trust signals to build into their launches.

On September 11, 2025, the FTC voted 3 to 0 to issue Section 6(b) orders to seven companies: Alphabet, Character Technologies, Instagram, Meta Platforms, OpenAI, Snap and X.AI. The orders ask how the companies measure, test and monitor possible negative effects of companion chatbots on children and teens, according to the FTC's announcement and a statement from Commissioner Melissa Holyoak.

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 243, the state's first companion-chatbot law, in October 2025, Kelley Drye reported, and its main provisions took effect on January 1, 2026. TMCnet's legal summary lists the requirements for systems used by minors: disclose that the chatbot is not human, repeat that disclosure every three hours of continuous use, block sexually explicit content and put suicide and self-harm response protocols in place by 2027.

Character.AI announced in October 2025 that users under 18 would lose access to open-ended chat, and the change took effect on November 25, 2025. The American Psychological Association has also warned that unregulated companion chatbots can create risks such as misinformation, privacy problems and unqualified advice, according to TMCnet's report.

Why Are Mainstream Brands Borrowing the Companion Pitch?

Mainstream AI brands have started to describe their assistants as companions, because users already treat them that way. OpenAI's first extended brand campaign for ChatGPT, launched September 29, 2025, used human-led storytelling to position it as a companion to life's little moments, B&T reported.

B&T noted that the campaign followed ChatGPT's first Super Bowl ad, created with agency Accenture Song, and that OpenAI named PHD its global media agency of record in August 2025. TechCrunch's August 2025 report on companion apps adds the user side: many ChatGPT users mourned the older GPT-4o model after the GPT-5 upgrade, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman brought 4o back for the time being.

The same attention competes with dating apps for time and spending, which is why EPR's list of dating app marketing campaigns and its guide to the six app marketing mechanics apply directly to companion apps.

What Can Brand and PR Teams Learn From AI Girlfriend Marketing?

Brand and PR teams can take five practical lessons from the category, each tied to a fact above.

  1. Differentiate early, because the top 10% of companion apps earn 89% of the revenue. A new app that sounds like every other "girlfriend" app has little chance of reaching that group.
  2. Test the words customers actually type. Appfigures found "girlfriend" in 17% of app names, so check whether your store listing and website use the same terms people search.
  3. Brief creators on what the product can claim. Replika's stated channel is creator partnerships, and the American Psychological Association has warned about unqualified advice from companion chatbots, so any emotional-support claim should be reviewed before a creator posts it.
  4. Put safety and age steps into the launch story. The FTC's 6(b) orders asked for records on testing and monitoring, so a documented safety process is easier to describe publicly than one assembled after a question arrives.
  5. Check how AI assistants describe your app. Users ask ChatGPT and Gemini which companion app to try, and EPR's Citation Share Index shows how to measure which brands those answers name.

The next step for a team in this category is to read the FTC's 6(b) questions as a checklist, because they describe what regulators expect a companion app to be able to show.
