Zero-Click Search

A zero-click search is a query answered directly on the results page — via a featured snippet, AI Overview, or knowledge panel — so the user never clicks through to a website.

Zero-click search is the traffic that never arrives. The searcher gets their answer on the results page itself — from a featured snippet, a Knowledge Panel, or now an AI Overview — and never visits a site. A majority of Google searches already end without a click, and AI answers are accelerating the trend.

For marketers raised on clicks, this looks like loss. Reframed, it's a shift in where value is captured. If the answer names your brand, you've won influence at the moment of decision — even without the visit. If it doesn't, the click was never going to save you.

This is why the metric is moving from traffic to citation share. In a zero-click world, being the cited source in the answer is the win. Visibility inside the answer beats a link nobody follows.
