Definition

An answer engine is an AI system that composes a direct answer to a user's question from a finite set of retrieved sources, rather than returning a ranked list of links. The five major consumer answer engines are ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

Why it matters

The answer engine is the structural replacement for the search results page on a growing share of consumer and B2B research questions. The interface produces a single composed answer, sometimes with citations, sometimes without — and the brands named in that answer enter the consumer's consideration set. Brands that built communications strategy for the search results page need to rebuild for the answer engine. The unit of competition is the answer, not the link.

Example

A consumer asks Perplexity "best electric SUV under $50,000." The engine returns a ranked list of three vehicles, each with reasoning, each with citations to specific outlets. The buyer reads the answer and clicks one citation. The four other manufacturers in that price range never enter consideration. The answer engine is the gate.
