Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews are the default answer layer of Google Search. Rolled out broadly in 2024 and powered by Gemini, they generate a synthesized response at the very top of the results page — pulling from multiple sources and citing a handful of them. For most informational queries, the Overview is the first thing a searcher sees. Often the only thing. The ten blue links now sit below the fold.
The strategic shift is brutal and simple: ranking #1 is no longer the goal — being cited in the Overview is. Brands that aren't extracted into the answer are invisible, even if they rank on page one. That's the difference between traffic and citation share.
AI Overviews reward extractable, well-structured, authoritative content — the same signals that drive visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. Optimizing for the Overview is the front door to Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
