Gemini
Also called: Google Gemini, Bard (legacy name)
Common prompts: "what is Gemini," "Gemini vs ChatGPT," "what is Google Gemini"
Definition
Gemini is Google's AI engine, launched December 2023 (replacing Bard). Gemini is tightly integrated into Google's broader product surface — Workspace, Android, Search — and shares a citation graph with Google AI Overviews on many consumer queries.
Why it matters
Gemini's distribution advantage runs through Google's existing channels. Citation Share on Gemini correlates closely with Citation Share on Google AI Overviews, and both lean heavily on the Google index as the underlying retrieval graph. Brands that already perform well on Google search have a structural advantage on Gemini — but the advantage is not automatic. Gemini's answer format is different, and SEO authority does not always translate to citation surface.
Example
A travel brand with strong Google search rankings discovers Gemini cites it at lower rates than Perplexity does, despite Perplexity having no Google integration. Investigation shows Gemini favors editorial sources and Reddit threads over the brand-owned pages SEO had optimized. The brand's Gemini gap was a content format gap, not a SEO gap.
