How to Get LegitScript Certified for Addiction Treatment

To get LegitScript certified, an addiction treatment provider confirms eligibility, gathers licensing, lease, insurance and domain records, submits the application in LegitScript's portal, pays the nonrefundable per-facility application fee, passes expert review against 16 standards, and then pays the annual fee. Certification is required to advertise addiction treatment on Google, Meta, Microsoft and Nextdoor. LegitScript lists the application fee at $1,395 to $1,595 per facility.

Fees, standards and process on this page come from LegitScript's addiction treatment certification page, last modified June 26, 2026. Confirm current pricing on LegitScript's addiction treatment certification page before you apply.

This guide follows the order an applicant works in. It starts with eligibility, moves through the standards and the records reviewers ask for, prices the process with worked examples, and ends with what certification does and does not do for a treatment center's marketing.

Who qualifies for LegitScript addiction treatment certification?

LegitScript certifies licensed addiction treatment providers in the United States and Canada, including detox, residential, outpatient, counseling and medication-assisted treatment programs run by licensed professionals. Co-occurring treatment programs qualify. Mutual support groups and crisis hotlines that do not promote specific providers can also apply.

Lead generators, call centers and marketers who refer patients to other providers for compensation are explicitly disallowed. A sober living home or recovery residence without licensed clinical services does not meet the requirements. That line matters for operators who run both a clinical program and a residence, because the clinical program may qualify while the residence alone does not.

Eligibility also depends on where you advertise. A provider that does not advertise on platforms requiring certification, or that operates only where certification is not a platform requirement, may not need to apply. Most treatment centers that buy search or social ads in the United States do need it.

What are the 16 LegitScript certification standards?

The 16 LegitScript standards fall into four groups: registration and compliance, internal practices, external practices, and transparency and advertising. LegitScript publishes the full list, and the table below summarizes what reviewers check in each group.

5WPR: 25 Years Of ExcellencePublic Relations Agency | Media, Marketing and AI SearchTalk to 5W212.999.5585info@5wpr.com
GroupWhat reviewers check
Registration and complianceCorporate registration, licensure for every service and jurisdiction, written policies and procedures, proof of ownership or lease for each facility, disclosure of every property and entity under your control
Internal practicesClinical staff qualifications, disclosure of criminal, regulatory and civil history, litigation from the past 10 years, insurance where the law requires it
External practicesWebsite accuracy, privacy compliance including HIPAA, and use of only approved medications for medication-assisted treatment
Transparency and advertisingNo affiliation with lead generators, accurate advertising, disclosure of patient incentives, compliant affiliates and partners, honest operations overall

The groups follow a logic. The first two prove the organization is real, licensed and open about its past. The last two prove it behaves honestly toward the public, online and in its business relationships. Applicants who prepare the first two groups carefully but treat the last two as an afterthought are the ones who run into trouble.

Which standards cause the most denials?

Four standards turn into denials most often because they test business relationships rather than paperwork. LegitScript does not publish denial statistics, so this ranking comes from reading the standards, not from outcome data.

Standard 12 prohibits co-ownership of, or informal business affiliation with, a lead generator. LegitScript's own example of an informal affiliation is sponsoring or answering a lead generator's hotline. Standard 14 requires disclosure of every patient incentive and says offers such as paying for travel generally make an applicant ineligible. Paying a patient's rent or insurance premiums during treatment is also named as a problem incentive.

Standard 13 says an applicant seen advertising on Google, Bing or Facebook without certification may be treated as circumventing the program, which can be grounds for denial. Standard 7 requires disclosure of prior violations and litigation, and LegitScript can treat prior offenses as disqualifying at its sole discretion.

These four standards connect to federal law. The Eliminating Kickbacks in Recovery Act, codified at 18 U.S.C. § 220, criminalizes paying or receiving remuneration for patient referrals to recovery homes, clinical treatment facilities and laboratories. A center that built its admissions on purchased referrals faces both a criminal exposure question and a certification problem, and the two reinforce each other. EPR covers the legal side in its analysis of the agencies behind rehab marketing and the post-2018 rules.

How do you prepare your website for LegitScript review?

Prepare the website before you submit, because reviewers check it against several standards at once. Standard 9 requires the site to show the physical address of every facility and the specific services provided, and it requires every photograph to depict your facilities truthfully. Stock photography of a facility you do not operate is a direct problem.

Standard 10 requires a posted privacy policy where the law demands one, and HIPAA compliance for any provider that handles protected health information. Standard 16 requires that all practices and offers are accurate and not misleading, including any material detail about the treatment facility. Standard 15 requires you to list every domain you control, so audit old microsites and campaign domains before you apply.

A practical pre-submission pass takes four checks. Read each page for claims you cannot document. Confirm that each facility page matches the license on file. Remove third-party business names from advertising copy. Confirm that no advertising is running on Google, Bing or Facebook before certification is in place.

What documents do you need before you apply?

Gather four sets of records before opening the application. LegitScript provides separate checklists for U.S. and Canadian applicants.

  1. Facility documentation covering names, addresses, lease or ownership records, liability insurance and licensure for each location.
  2. Corporate and practitioner licenses covering business registration numbers for the organization and its principals, facility-level licensure and details of key licensed treatment staff.
  3. Controlled substances authorization, meaning current DEA certificates for any practitioner who prescribes controlled substances.
  4. Domain and website information listing every domain the organization owns, including domains you do not plan to certify.

Assign one person to own the file. Documents for a multi-site operator usually sit with different people in operations, clinical leadership and legal, and an application stalls when nobody collects them in one place.

How much does LegitScript addiction treatment certification cost?

LegitScript prices certification per unique facility, defined as a distinct location that provides addiction treatment services, even under the same corporate registration. Per-facility rates drop as the number of facilities rises.

FacilitiesApplication fee (each)Annual fee (each)
1 to 9$1,595$3,095
10 to 24$1,495$2,775
25 or more$1,395$2,550
Individual practitioner (1 to 3 practitioners, one location, one website)$535$1,070

The application fee is nonrefundable regardless of outcome and starts the review. The annual fee is due only after approval. LegitScript charges an extra $2,500 per application for expedited processing, which starts the review within 2 business days of submission. Qualifying nonprofits facing hardship can request an annual fee waiver during the application.

Three worked examples show the first-year totals from those published rates, before any expedited fee. A three-location operator pays 3 x $1,595 in application fees ($4,785) and 3 x $3,095 in annual fees ($9,285), for $14,070. A twelve-location operator falls in the 10 to 24 tier and pays 12 x $1,495 ($17,940) plus 12 x $2,775 ($33,300), for $51,240. An eligible individual practitioner pays $535 plus $1,070, for $1,605. Renewal years cost the annual fee alone.

What are the steps from application to approval?

LegitScript describes five steps from eligibility check to certification.

  1. Check eligibility by confirming your location, business type and scope of services.
  2. Gather documentation using the application checklist for your business type.
  3. Submit the application in LegitScript's client portal and pay the application fee.
  4. Wait for expert review, in which LegitScript's team verifies the business against every standard and its terms and conditions.
  5. Pay the annual fee after approval to finalize certification.

LegitScript's page does not state a fixed review length for standard applications, so do not schedule ad launches around an assumed date. Providers with an urgent launch can pay for expedited processing, which fixes when the review starts, not when it ends.

What happens after you are certified?

Certification comes with ongoing monitoring against the standards and against platform advertising policies. LegitScript issues a seal that certified providers can display on their websites, and anyone can check a website's certification status on LegitScript's site.

Annual fees are nonrefundable and can be canceled by written request at any time, which ends certification status immediately. LegitScript issues no pro-rated refunds for the unused part of a term. Because monitoring continues, treat the standards as operating rules and not as a one-time hurdle: a new domain, a new facility or a new marketing partner each needs to fit them.

What does certification do for your marketing?

Certification opens paid channels. It does not build a brand. Providers that pair certification with accreditation records, named clinical leadership and evidence-cited content give both families and AI engines something to cite. EPR's analysis of successful rehab digital marketing campaigns covers the campaigns that ran under these rules, and how major rehab centers build their brands covers the institutional layer that follows certification.

The same records that satisfy LegitScript also feed organic visibility. A treatment center that publishes its licensure, leadership credentials and facility details accurately gives search engines and AI answer engines consistent facts to retrieve, which is the core idea behind generative engine optimization. Public figures raise the stakes further, as EPR's look at public-figure addiction communications shows.

How do you choose a partner for the work after certification?

Choose a partner who can work inside the same rules, because an agency that buys leads or is paid per admission can put your certification at risk. Ask any firm how it is compensated, where its referrals come from and how it documents patient consent. EPR's PR agency directory and its healthcare coverage list firms by specialty.

5W's addiction treatment and mental health marketing practice shows how a specialist team handles LegitScript, HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2 and EKRA requirements. For budgeting, see addiction treatment PR cost and what to expect, and for incident planning see behavioral health crisis communications. EPR's broader crisis communications coverage and wellness coverage add context.

What should you do first?

Start with the website audit and the domain list, because they take the longest to fix and block everything else. Then assign a single owner for the document file, confirm that no advertising runs without certification, and submit. Treat the first annual fee as the cost of keeping paid channels open, and budget the next year's renewal on the same day.
