Executive Education vs. the MBA Degree: Why Practitioners Are Ahead

Dimension 4 of the 5W AI Business School Index measures Executive AI Education. On this dimension, the pattern is clear: executive education programs have moved faster than MBA degree programs on AI.

Why Executive Ed Moved First

Executive education has fewer governance constraints. A program can be designed, approved, and launched in six months. An MBA curriculum change requires faculty committee review, accreditation board approval, and multi-year phase-in.

Where the Gap Is Largest

INSEAD (#10, 78.0) is a standout. Its executive programs in AI strategy and AI-native business model design are among the strongest in the Index — and pivoted toward AI faster than its MBA curriculum.

London Business School (#9, 79.5) shows a similar pattern. HEC Paris (#40, 61.5) — mid-table overall but disproportionately strong on executive AI offerings.

Why Practitioners Are Ahead

Practitioners who take executive programs see AI disruption in real time. The demand signal is louder. The development cycle is faster. Programs iterate quarterly, not annually.

MBA degree programs update on academic calendars. Faculty sabbaticals, tenure cycles, and accreditation timelines all slow change.

The Implication

Schools with strong executive education but weak MBA AI integration are delivering AI competency to executives while underserving MBA students. The schools that align executive education speed with MBA curriculum will lead the next iteration of the Index.
