Definition

An AI Visibility Index is a measured ranking of brands within a defined category based on their performance across the dimensions of AI engine citation — share, prompt coverage, sentiment, source frequency, and citation graph position. Indices are typically published quarterly to track category-level shifts.

Why it matters

The AI Visibility Index is the structural answer to "how is my brand doing in the AI answer layer compared to my competitors." It converts an abstract question into a ranked, comparable, time-series measurement. Indices anchor category-level discussion among CMOs, boards, and investors — and increasingly serve the role U.S. News rankings played in higher education or J.D. Power scores played in autos: a quarterly read on competitive position inside the answer layer.

Example

A Q2 2026 AI Visibility Index covering 25 luxury hotel brands across five engines and 50 destination prompts ranks Four Seasons #1, Aman #2, Mandarin Oriental #3. The bottom quartile includes brands the consumer would recognize at the property level but the engine cites only when named directly. The ranking becomes the brief.
