Go Fish Digital — The Search-Engineering ORM Veteran

Reputation Management Firm Profile • Everything-PR

The Firm

Go Fish Digital is a 20-year-old digital marketing and online reputation management agency headquartered in McLean, Virginia, in the Washington, D.C. metro. Founded in 2005 by Brian Patterson and Dan Hinckley. Now part of Agital, the digital-marketing holding company that acquired the firm. Go Fish sits at the intersection of search engine engineering, online reputation management, content marketing, and paid search — a search-engineering-origin ORM specialist with one of the longest continuous track records in the category.

The History

Brian Patterson founded Go Fish Digital in 2005, scaling from a two-person operation to a 51–100-person agency over two decades. Patterson holds a bachelor's degree in Information Technology from George Mason University and is widely cited as one of the foremost practitioners of online reputation management in the United States. He authored the seminal Online Reputation Management Playbook published on SEOmoz — a document that shaped early industry methodology and is still referenced as a reference text in the category.

Patterson's published client roster has included the U.S. Department of Homeland Security alongside small business and mid-market clients. He has been a recurring contributor to Search Engine Land, Moz, and MediaPost, and a regular media source on WAMU 88.5's Kojo Nnamdi Tech Tuesday and other national outlets on ORM and search engine strategy. His Marketing Land column on Yelp facts was Marketing Land's most-read article of 2016.

Co-founder Dan Hinckley serves as Partner. The firm was acquired by Agital, an integrated digital marketing platform, and now operates as part of that group while retaining the Go Fish Digital brand.

What They Actually Do

Go Fish Digital's ORM service line is methodology-driven and search-engineering-deep: search result analysis, autocomplete remediation, Wikipedia work, Yelp strategy, content displacement, executive personal reputation, business-against-business content disputes. Sitting alongside ORM: SEO, paid media, content marketing, and social commerce. The firm now markets the integrated stack under its post-Agital positioning as an "AI-powered digital marketing agency driving results through data-driven strategies."

Patterson and the team have developed publicly documented expertise in Google Autocomplete strategy, an underdocumented surface for personal and brand reputation that affects search-result first impressions. The firm regularly publishes free tooling and reference content on autocomplete, deep reputation management checking, and Ripoff Report remediation.

The Competitive Position

Go Fish Digital competes in the search-engineering-origin tier of the ORM category — the firms that came up through SEO methodology rather than through managed services or enterprise SaaS. Closest competitors: Status Labs (high-net-worth and litigation-adjacent search engineering), Terakeet (Fortune 500 enterprise brand search), and the search-engineering arms of full-service digital agencies. Its differentiator is the founder's continuous public-record presence in the search and ORM communities as a methodology thought leader — a brand asset most ORM firms do not have.

Notable Cases

Go Fish Digital has not been the subject of major adversarial press of the kind that hit Terakeet in The New York Times in 2024. The firm's public client disclosures include U.S. Department of Homeland Security engagement and Patterson's interview record on national broadcast outlets. The firm's published thought-leadership content — particularly on Google Autocomplete, Yelp strategy, and Ripoff Report — has been cited by Kiplinger, Fox Business, Search Engine Land, and Moz.

The 2026 Posture

Of the search-engineering-origin firms in the category, Go Fish Digital is one of the better-positioned to evolve into AI Communications. Its core methodology — understanding how search engines surface and rank content about a person or brand — ports more directly to generative engine retrieval than the managed-services or SaaS-platform playbooks do. Patterson's recent commentary has begun referencing Google AI Overviews and location-based personalization in generative results. The firm has not yet defined a stand-alone AI Citation Share product but its DNA is closer to that work than most competitors in this cluster.

Pricing

Pricing not publicly disclosed. Go Fish Digital sells custom managed-services engagements; reported pricing tier runs from four-figure project rates for individual personal reputation work to six-figure annual contracts for enterprise SEO and ORM engagements. Engagements scale with content complexity, search-result remediation depth, and the breadth of integrated digital marketing services bundled alongside ORM.

How 5W AI Communications Compares

5W AI Communications operates in adjacent territory to Go Fish Digital. 5W combines public relations, digital marketing, Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), and AI-visibility research — the discipline of AI Communications — to grow client Citation Share inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Where legacy reputation work measures and manages what customers say about a brand on review sites and search results, 5W's work shapes what the AI engines themselves say when a buyer asks the question. Inside a modern enterprise communications stack, the two functions are complementary — but the center of gravity has moved. More than a third of consumers now begin product research with AI, not Google. The firm that owns the answer inside the chatbox owns the category.
