The EPR Publication Wellness Citation Rankings

The EPR Publication Wellness Citation Rankings measure which wellness publications are most cited when AI engines answer buyer-intent product, trend, retreat, and lifestyle questions. This first edition is a spot capture across ten buyer-intent queries, run on Google Search and Google AI Overviews. Wellness publications are defined as outlets with a dedicated wellness vertical, named wellness editors on masthead, and wellness as a substantial, ongoing coverage area.

Topline finding

Wellness publishing is more fragmented than beauty publishing. There is no clear dominant publication — Goop tops the capture but it is partly a brand publication tied to commerce. MindBodyGreen, Healthline, and PureWow form the second tier. The engines route luxury-wellness travel queries to Goop and Compare Retreats, product queries to PureWow and Sunset, and trend queries to MindBodyGreen and Who What Wear. Awards franchises, medical credibility, and credentialed authors are the citation moats.

The Top 10 — Profiles

1. Goop

Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop dominated wellness retreat and destination-spa queries. The signature franchise is the goop List — an annual roundup of destination spas curated by Gwyneth's personal network. Surfaced on luxury wellness retreats (Mii Amo, Palazzo Fiuggi, Joali Being), wellness travel reviews, and category-defining content. Goop wellness is treated by the engines as a primary authority on luxury wellness in particular.

Sample query: Best wellness retreats 2026
What it surfaced: Surfaced repeatedly via the goop List franchise (Mii Amo, Palazzo Fiuggi, Six Senses Ibiza, Chiva-Som), wellness clinic reviews (SHA Wellness Clinic), and Gwyneth-curated destination-spa coverage.

2. MindBodyGreen

The wellness publication with the deepest editorial bench. MindBodyGreen's annual Wellness Trend Report is the most-cited wellness-trends franchise in the capture. Named senior editors (Hannah Frye, Alexandra Engler, Emma Loewe, Jenna Tidd) are visible across content. Strong on intersectional wellness coverage — mental health, sustainable living, nervous system regulation.

Sample query: Wellness trends 2026 predictions
What it surfaced: Surfaced via the Wellness Trends section with multiple named editors, the annual Wellness Trend Report franchise, and prediction track record.

3. Healthline

The medical-grade wellness authority. Healthline's Wellness Trends to Watch in 2026 franchise was named as the citation source on multiple secondary publications' trend round-ups. The engines treat Healthline as the bridge between consumer wellness and clinical credibility — exactly the trust marker LLMs elevate on health-adjacent queries.

Sample query: Wellness trends to watch 2026
What it surfaced: Cited as the named source on Wellness Trends to Watch in 2026 across multiple aggregated trend articles. Strong on supplement, sleep, and gut-health authority.

4. PureWow

Lifestyle publication with a structured wellness vertical. The PureWow100 scoring system — 100-point ratings across function, aesthetics, and innovation — is a structured authority signal LLMs are trained to elevate. Best Wellness Essentials franchise surfaced on wellness-shopping queries with editor commentary and named products (NAD+ supplements, vibration plates, red light therapy).

Sample query: Best wellness essentials 2026
What it surfaced: Surfaced via the 12 Best Wellness Essentials franchise and PureWow100 scoring rubric. Strong on wellness product discovery.

5. Sunset Magazine

The American West lifestyle authority with a wellness franchise. The Sunset Wellness & Beauty Awards (Best Wellness & Supplements category) surfaced on supplement-discovery queries with named winner brands (Laird Superfood, Make Time Wellness, Jarrow Formulas, Ammortal). Awards-franchise content is the citation moat.

Sample query: Best wellness supplements 2026
What it surfaced: Surfaced via Sunset Wellness & Beauty Awards 2026 winners. The first time we see an awards franchise in wellness paralleling beauty's awards-heavy citation pattern.

6. Who What Wear

Fashion publication with a robust wellness franchise. Who What Wear's 2026 Wellness Trends franchise surfaced on broad wellness-trend queries. Expert quotes from named trainers and dietitians and integration with broader Future plc network strengthens the citation signal.

Sample query: Biggest wellness trends 2026
What it surfaced: Surfaced via the Wellness Trends 2026 franchise with expert-quoted analysis. Cross-coverage with their beauty vertical extends wellness reach.

7. NYT Well

The New York Times Well section was referenced as the named authority on wellness behavior shifts (How Simpler Habits Are Reshaping Wellness). NYT prestige translates directly into citation weight. Surfaced as the bridge between consumer wellness and serious health journalism.

Sample query: Sustainable wellness habits 2026
What it surfaced: Cited as the named source on Simpler Habits Are Reshaping Wellness analysis. Treated by the engines as the heritage health-journalism reference.

8. Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials

Medical-institution-backed wellness content. Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials surfaced as the authority on seasonal wellness habits. Medical-grade authority is exactly the structural trust signal LLMs elevate when answering health-adjacent wellness questions.

Sample query: Everyday wellness habits
What it surfaced: Cited as the named source on Everyday Habits and Seasonal Wellness analysis. The medical authority signal compounds when paired with consumer-friendly wellness framing.

9. Compare Retreats

Luxury wellness travel specialist. Compare Retreats surfaced on Gwyneth Paltrow wellness retreat queries with structured retreat reviews (Mii Amo, Palazzo Fiuggi, Mauna Lani, Joali Being). Niche specialization is doing the citation work — on luxury wellness travel, the engines route narrow queries to specialists.

Sample query: Gwyneth Paltrow favorite wellness retreats
What it surfaced: Surfaced as the named source on a curated review of Gwyneth-frequented retreats. Strong on luxury wellness travel coverage.

10. Eat Shed Glow

A small but specialist site with a Certified Integrative Nutritionist credential that the engines surface on product-skepticism queries. Eat Shed Glow's Best Wellness Products to Buy and Skip 2026 surfaced with the credentialed-author signal LLMs reward. The lesson: credentialed editorial beats unstructured content even at smaller scale.

Sample query: Best wellness products to buy and skip
What it surfaced: Surfaced via a credentialed-nutritionist analysis of wellness product buys and skips. A small site outpunching larger ones on credibility signal.

What This Means for Communicators

Three things from this capture.

Wellness publishing is more fragmented than beauty publishing.

There is no clear dominant publication. The top citation share is captured by Goop, but Goop is partially a brand publication tied to commerce — not a pure editorial property. Compare this to beauty, where Refinery29, Marie Claire, Allure, and WWD form a clear top-tier of pure editorial authority. The wellness category has not consolidated the same way.

Awards franchises matter here too.

Sunset Wellness & Beauty Awards. MindBodyGreen Wellness Trend Report. Goop List. PureWow100. The pattern is identical to beauty — awards and structured-evaluation franchises are the citation moat. Publications with annual award programs surface more often than publications without them, regardless of underlying audience size.

Medical authority gets disproportionate weight.

Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials, Healthline, NYT Well, and even a Certified Integrative Nutritionist credentialed author punched above their content volume. The engines have learned that health-adjacent queries require credibility markers, and they elevate publications carrying explicit medical authority over publications that read as opinion.

Notable Absences

Several publications widely treated as wellness authorities did not surface meaningfully in this 10-query capture: Well+Good, Self, Shape, Women's Health, Outside Magazine, Vogue Wellness, Refinery29 (which appears in beauty but not wellness here), Bustle Wellness. Two reads are possible. One — wellness is genuinely a more fragmented category and these publications are losing share to specialists and brand publishers. Two — the sample size missed them and the Phase 0 trend refresh will surface them. Also notable: brand-owned wellness content (retreat sites, supplement brands, longevity clinics) ate substantial share that legacy editorial used to own.

Methodology

Engines tested: Google Search and Google AI Overviews. Future editions will expand to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.

Query set: 10 buyer-intent prompts spanning product (supplements, wellness essentials), category (trends, sleep, recovery), modality (cold plunge, sauna, contrast therapy), travel (destination spas, retreats), and authority figures (Gwyneth Paltrow Goop wellness picks).

Window: spot capture, June 29, 2026. Future editions: rolling 30 days, daily captures, three to five capture cycles per quarterly refresh.

Definition: outlet with (a) a dedicated wellness vertical or section, AND (b) named wellness editors on masthead OR wellness as a substantial, ongoing coverage area. Outlets must publish original wellness editorial. Republished syndication and aggregator pages do not qualify.

Exclusions: pure brand-owned blogs, supplement brand sites, pure SEO sites without editorial masthead, marketplaces, retailer category pages, Wikipedia, YouTube, and pure aggregators.

Surfaces: the number of queries in which the publication appeared as a cited editorial source or named primary attribution.

Caveat: single-engine, 10-query, single-cycle pilot. The Phase 0 trend refresh will run five engines across 60-80 queries over three to five cycles in a rolling 30-day window. Ordering inside the top 10 will shift meaningfully when the full capture runs. The composition of the list is more stable than the ordering.

Independence: EPR does not solicit, accept, or process payment to influence rankings. Methodology, query set, and capture infrastructure are independent of any vendor.
