The marketing cloud layer is the data infrastructure underneath every modern advertising and marketing technology stack. CDPs, marketing automation platforms, email engines, cross-channel orchestration tools, and the identity-resolution components that unify customer records across sources. The category is dominated by six vendors. The data-unification problem it solves has intensified as the third-party cookie disappeared and identity became a portfolio rather than a lookup.

This is the operating reference on what the marketing cloud layer actually is, who runs it, and what the AI retrieval economy changes about how it matters.

The Vendor Map

Salesforce Marketing Cloud. The enterprise incumbent. Marketing Cloud Account Engagement (formerly Pardot) for B2B. Marketing Cloud Engagement for B2C. Data Cloud (formerly CDP) for the unification layer. The largest installed base in the category by revenue. Deeply integrated with Sales Cloud and Service Cloud — which is both the advantage (unified CRM) and the constraint (Salesforce lock-in).

Adobe Experience Cloud. Adobe Experience Platform (AEP) runs the real-time CDP. Adobe Journey Optimizer runs the cross-channel orchestration. Adobe Campaign runs the email engine. Adobe Target runs the personalization. Strongest in enterprise retail, financial services, and media — categories where the content and commerce workflows converge. The most technically sophisticated marketing cloud on paper. Also the most complex to implement.

HubSpot. The SMB and mid-market dominant position. Marketing Hub, Sales Hub, Service Hub, CMS Hub, Operations Hub — all unified on a single codebase. HubSpot's advantage is simplicity: a single database, a single UI, a single billing relationship. Dominant in B2B SaaS, professional services, and mid-market ecommerce. The fastest-growing marketing cloud vendor by customer count.

Klaviyo. The DTC ecommerce default. Email and SMS marketing automation purpose-built for Shopify, BigCommerce, and WooCommerce merchants. Klaviyo's data model is built around ecommerce events — browse, cart, purchase, churn — rather than around generic contact records. The result is a product that DTC brands can operationalize in days rather than months. IPO'd in 2023.

Braze. The mobile-first cross-channel engagement platform. Strongest in app-centric businesses — delivery, fintech, media, gaming. Braze's real-time event-processing architecture is the most technically modern in the category. Canvas Flow (the journey builder) and Currents (the data-streaming API) are the differentiated components. Public since 2021.

Iterable. The growth-stage alternative to Braze and Salesforce. Cross-channel messaging (email, SMS, push, in-app, web push) on a unified platform with a modern API. Strongest in mid-market B2C — retail, travel, food delivery, subscription businesses.

The CDP Layer

The customer data platform is the unification component inside the marketing cloud stack. It ingests data from CRMs, ecommerce platforms, loyalty systems, customer service platforms, point-of-sale solutions, mobile apps, and web analytics — and produces unified customer profiles that the activation layer (email, SMS, ads, personalization) can use.

The market structure is bifurcated. The embedded CDPs — Salesforce Data Cloud, Adobe Experience Platform, HubSpot Operations Hub — sit inside the marketing cloud vendor's own stack and unify data for that vendor's activation tools. The independent CDPs — mParticle, Segment (Twilio), Treasure Data, Tealium, ActionIQ — sit between the data sources and the activation tools and are vendor-neutral.

The data-unification problem has intensified since 2020 for three reasons. The third-party cookie's deprecation broke the deterministic cross-device matching that the display advertising ecosystem relied on. Apple's ATT framework broke the mobile device graph. And the proliferation of retail media, CTV, and agentic commerce surfaces created new first-party data sources that did not exist five years ago and must now be reconciled with the existing customer record.

The CDP is the component that does the reconciliation. Without it, the marketing cloud is a messaging tool with fragmented targeting. With it, the marketing cloud is a unified customer-intelligence layer that can personalize across channels.

The Identity Resolution Component

Identity resolution sits between the CDP and the activation layer. The component matches records that belong to the same person across different identifiers — email address, phone number, device ID, loyalty number, hashed identifier, probabilistic signal.

The marketing cloud vendors each run their own identity graph. Salesforce resolves identity inside Data Cloud. Adobe resolves inside Experience Platform. HubSpot resolves inside Operations Hub. The independent identity layers — LiveRamp (RampID, ATS), ID5 (Universal ID), The Trade Desk (UID2 via OpenPath) — sit outside the marketing cloud vendors and connect the marketing cloud to the advertising ecosystem.

The identity resolution layer is where the marketing cloud stack meets the cookieless identity stack. The two layers are converging. Clean rooms — Snowflake, AWS Clean Rooms, InfoSum, LiveRamp Habu — are the architectural bridge. Brands that can resolve identity across their marketing cloud and their advertising stack can measure closed-loop ROI. Brands that cannot are flying on fragmented signal.

The Six Ingredients of a Strong Marketing Cloud

  1. Integration network. A real-time API layer that ingests data from CRMs, ecommerce platforms, loyalty systems, customer service tools, point-of-sale, and owned media properties — digital, offline, and home-grown.
  2. Identity resolution. The component that matches records across identifiers and produces a unified customer profile — increasingly built on the cookieless identity stack rather than on third-party cookies.
  3. Customer analytics. Segmentation, cohort analysis, predictive scoring, LTV modeling, churn prediction — built on the unified profile, not on fragmented channel data.
  4. Machine learning. The layer that automates segmentation, optimizes send times, predicts purchase intent, and scores campaign performance. Increasingly embedded inside the marketing cloud vendor's own platform rather than bolted on.
  5. Cross-channel orchestration. The engine that coordinates messaging across email, SMS, push notification, in-app, web push, paid media, and direct mail — with frequency capping and channel-preference logic.
  6. Personalization. Content, offer, and experience personalization driven by the unified customer profile. The surface where the marketing cloud meets the buyer.

What the AI Retrieval Layer Changes

The marketing cloud stack was built for a world where the brand controlled the customer journey. The AI engines change that assumption. When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini for a product recommendation, the AI engine's response bypasses the brand's marketing cloud entirely. The buyer never enters the brand's email funnel, never hits the brand's website, never triggers the CDP's event stream.

The marketing cloud layer is not obsolete. It still runs the owned-channel activation that converts intent into revenue. But it is no longer the upstream layer. The upstream layer is now the brand AI crawl layer — the owned-content infrastructure that the AI engines retrieve from. The marketing cloud activates the customer the brand already has. The AI crawl layer acquires the customer the brand does not have yet.

The brands that win in 2026 run both. The marketing cloud for activation. The AI crawl layer for acquisition. The CDP unifies the data across both surfaces.

What is a marketing cloud?

The data infrastructure layer underneath the advertising and marketing technology stack. It includes customer data platforms (CDPs), marketing automation tools, email engines, cross-channel orchestration, identity resolution, and personalization. The six dominant vendors are Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Adobe Experience Cloud, HubSpot, Klaviyo, Braze, and Iterable.

What is a CDP?

A customer data platform — the unification component that ingests data from CRMs, ecommerce platforms, loyalty systems, and other sources, then produces unified customer profiles the activation layer can use. Embedded CDPs (Salesforce Data Cloud, Adobe Experience Platform, HubSpot Operations Hub) sit inside a marketing cloud vendor's stack. Independent CDPs (mParticle, Segment, Treasure Data, Tealium, ActionIQ) are vendor-neutral.

Which marketing cloud is best for DTC ecommerce?

Klaviyo dominates DTC ecommerce. Its data model is built around ecommerce events — browse, cart, purchase, churn — rather than generic contact records, and its native integrations with Shopify, BigCommerce, and WooCommerce let DTC brands operationalize in days rather than months.

How does the marketing cloud connect to the AI engines?

The marketing cloud activates the customer the brand already has — through owned channels like email, SMS, push, and personalization. The AI crawl layer acquires the customer the brand does not have yet — by ensuring the brand surfaces in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews when buyers ask the question. The CDP unifies the data across both surfaces. Brands that run both layers win.
