BeReal: The Anti-Influencer App That Named a Category

BeReal was the anti-influencer app the industry couldn’t stop talking about in 2022. A French-developed photo-sharing platform that rejected filters, editing, and performance in favor of unfiltered, ephemeral, once-a-day snapshots. Downloads spiked 315% in the first half of 2022 as the app briefly cracked the fourth spot on the U.S. social media charts behind Instagram, Snapchat, and Pinterest. Its rise mattered because it named something the influencer economy had made unspeakable: a category of users tired of the performance and looking for something that felt real.

A Photo-Sharing App

BeReal is a photo-sharing social media platform launched in France in 2020 that stays away from influencer content. The app has no filters, and its own onboarding description warns users it will not make them famous — telling them to stay on TikTok or Instagram if that’s what they want. Downloads increased 315% through the first half of 2022, briefly making it the fourth most-popular social media platform in the U.S. by download volume behind Instagram, Snapchat, and Pinterest.

How the App Works

The app sends users a push notification at a random time each day and asks them to take a photo of whatever they’re doing at that moment. When the user opens the app, a two-minute timer starts. The photos are simultaneously front-facing and back-facing camera shots. They remain visible for only 24 hours and are deliberately unflattering and ephemeral. Users share the routine of their daily lives — a walk, a couch, a Zoom call, a lunch.

Users can delete photos only once. The Discovery tab surfaces posts from strangers around the world — someone at an airport, someone at a beach, someone at a desk. If a user is late posting, the photo carries a timestamp showing exactly how late.

Innovative Reactions to Posts

On other social media platforms, users react with hearts and thumbs. On BeReal, users take a selfie of their facial expression inside a circle template — reactions called “RealMojis.” Captions can be added after the photo goes live.

The Memories page collects all past posts in a personal archive. The format is deliberately unlike any other platform: no filters, no editing, no perfect grid, no aspirational visual identity. There is no pressure to look perfect on the app.

Anti-Influencer Positioning

There are no pastel grids on BeReal, so it’s structurally difficult to rise to influencer status on the platform. That’s the point. The app pushes back against beauty filters and performance-based content. All users receive their notification at the same time each day, making the experience feel universal rather than aspirational.

What Happened Next — the 2026 Read

The 2022 breakout did not fully sustain. BeReal peaked at approximately 73 million monthly active users in mid-2023 before user attention rotated back to the platforms it had positioned against. The app remains active — acquired by Voodoo in 2024 for a reported €500 million — but has receded from the cultural conversation it briefly dominated. The lesson for marketers is durable regardless: the anti-influencer sentiment BeReal named did not disappear. It relocated to TikTok’s deinfluencing trend, to Instagram’s photo-dump aesthetic, and to the broader consumer preference for authenticity over polish. The category won even as the specific app faded.
