Best Press Release Distribution Services: 5 Wires Ranked

Summary: The best press release distribution services for AI visibility, ranked by Citation Share in Everything-PR's Wire Service Citation Audit 2026, are GlobeNewswire (31.3%), Business Wire (18.8%), PR Newswire (16.7%), and TMX Newsfile and ACCESS Newswire (12.5% each). No wire won every vertical, so the right choice depends on your industry, your audience and what you need beyond AI retrieval.

How were these press release distribution services ranked?

The ranking uses Citation Share, the share of possible points a wire earned when AI engines were asked 24 buyer-style prompts across five industries. A wire scored 2 points when its own domain appeared in an engine's sources and 1 point when its content surfaced through a downstream syndication carrier that kept the wire's name. Claude and Google AI Overviews were tested directly. The full method is in the Wire Service Citation Audit 2026.

This is a pilot, not a market-share measure. Twenty-four prompts is directional, only two engines were tested directly, and wire results track client mix, because biotech companies cluster on one wire and junior miners on others. Treat the ranking as evidence about AI retrieval, not as a verdict on newsroom reach, compliance features or price.

Which are the best press release distribution services?

Five wires were audited. Here is how they compare, with the industry each one won.

RankWireCitation ShareVertical it wonOwner
1GlobeNewswire31.3%Small and mid-cap biotechNotified
2Business Wire18.8%Mid-cap medtech and B2B SaaSBerkshire Hathaway
3PR Newswire16.7%Large-cap B2B, including cybersecurity and banksCision
4TMX Newsfile12.5%Junior mining, US-listed micro-capTMX Group
4 (tie)ACCESS Newswire12.5%Junior mining, Canadian-listedIssuer Direct Corp

GlobeNewswire leads partly because biotech and regional bank deals appeared in eight of the 24 prompts. The two smaller wires tied at 12.5% each but won their target vertical outright, which the larger wires did not.

What does each wire offer?

1. GlobeNewswire

GlobeNewswire, owned by Notified, earned the top Citation Share at 31.3% and won small and mid-cap biotech. Its release path permits AI crawlers including GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, the audit found. GlobeNewswire publishes no price list on the pages checked, so ask Notified for a written quote.

2. Business Wire

Business Wire earned 18.8% and won mid-cap medtech and B2B SaaS. The audit found a mixed crawler signal, with retrieval coming mostly through syndication carriers such as Morningstar. Read more in the Business Wire company profile.

3. PR Newswire

PR Newswire, a Cision company, earned 16.7% and won large-cap B2B releases from sectors such as cybersecurity and banking. It was the most restrictive of the five on AI crawler access, and direct citation happened mainly where downstream carriers preserved its name. Read more in the PR Newswire company profile.

4. TMX Newsfile

TMX Newsfile earned 12.5% and won US-listed junior mining. It permits AI crawlers on its release pages, and it has published its own research on AI crawler activity across about 120 releases over a 72-hour window. Pricing is quote-based.

4 (tie). ACCESS Newswire

ACCESS Newswire, owned by Issuer Direct Corp, earned 12.5% and won Canadian-listed junior mining. The audit credits part of that result to its Morningstar partnership, which keeps the wire's name in the URL. It has also launched ACCESS Insights and Analytics, an AI-powered tool that scores releases across eight metrics.

Which wire fits your industry?

The audit's central finding is that wire choice should follow your vertical, not your budget tier. No wire dominated outside its lane.

Five of the 24 prompts returned no wire surface at all in any engine. They involved Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and AST SpaceMobile, where editorial coverage and company pages crowd out the releases. A wire can still be worth buying for compliance or wire-service dissemination in those cases, but not for AI visibility.

What about budget press release services?

The audit covered only the five wires above, so the services below have no Citation Share score and are not ranked. Prices come from third-party listings, which often disagree, so confirm any figure with the provider.

ServiceListed starting priceNotes
EIN PresswireAbout $149 per releaseThree recent listings show $149, while older reviews show $99.95
eReleasesFrom about $399 per releaseListings describe editorial review and access to a PR Newswire network
Send2PressAbout $289 for US national distributionA PR writing service is listed as an extra $199
PRWebAbout $110 per releaseListed as a value option on the Cision network

Online PR's 2026 comparison notes that pricing is clearest for services like EIN Presswire and PRWeb, while PR Newswire, Business Wire and GlobeNewswire typically require a sales conversation. Cheaper services also tend to reach fewer newsrooms.

How much does press release distribution cost?

Costs depend on the circuit, word count, multimedia and add-ons. Provider-listed starting prices for a 400-word US release range from $355 to $940 across Business Wire and PR Newswire, and PR Newswire adds an annual membership fee. Those figures were checked on October 7, 2026 and are set out, with the caveats, in Everything-PR's press release distribution guide.

The same audit estimated that a 1,000-word national release with an image runs roughly $1,500 to $3,000 at PR Newswire and about $2,210 at Business Wire once add-ons are counted, using third-party estimates. By those estimates the higher-priced wires did not show higher AI retrieval in this pilot. Use written quotes for your own budget.

What does press release distribution actually deliver?

Distribution places copies of your release on a network. It does not guarantee independent coverage, referral traffic or AI citations. Everything-PR's Press Release Retrieval Study 2026 found that 47 of 250 wire-distributed releases, or 19%, were cited by at least one AI engine within 90 days. Editorial pickup was the strongest predictor of citation, and none of the 50 award, certification and partnership releases were cited.

That matches the audit's headline: AI engines tend to cite the editorial rewrite of a release, not the release itself. The release is the input that triggers coverage. For the writing side, see how to write a press release.

How do you choose a press release distribution service?

  1. Name the audience first, such as investors, trade press, regional media or search presence.
  2. Match the wire to your industry using the vertical table above.
  3. Ask each provider for a written quote for the same release, with the same word count and assets.
  4. Ask whether the wire permits AI crawlers on its release pages.
  5. Ask which syndication carriers keep the wire's name in the URL or text.
  6. Keep one wire across a deal's announcement, approval and close, since splitting wires fragments the retrieval record.
  7. Measure coverage, referral traffic and AI citations separately.
Methodology notes and limits

Citation Share figures are from the Wire Service Citation Audit 2026, run in June 2026 on 24 prompts across five industries, with Claude and Google AI Overviews tested directly. Wire dominance correlates with client tier, so results measure observed retrieval, not isolated network quality. Prices marked as listed are third-party figures and may differ from provider quotes. Budget services were not audited.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which press release distribution service is best?

By AI Citation Share in the Everything-PR audit, GlobeNewswire ranked first at 31.3%. No wire won every industry, so the best choice depends on your vertical, audience and compliance needs.

Which wire is best for AI visibility?

GlobeNewswire, TMX Newsfile and ACCESS Newswire permit AI crawlers on their release pages and each won a vertical outright. PR Newswire was the most restrictive on crawler access in the audit.

Is a more expensive wire better?

Not for AI retrieval in this pilot. The higher-priced wires showed lower citation results in the tested prompts, though they offer compliance and wire-service reach that the audit did not measure.

Do press releases still get cited by AI?

Sometimes. In a 250-release study, 19% were cited by at least one AI engine within 90 days, and editorial pickup was the strongest predictor.

What are cheaper alternatives to the big wires?

EIN Presswire, eReleases, Send2Press and PRWeb list lower starting prices. They were not audited, and cheaper services generally reach fewer newsrooms.
