Social AI Search: How Meta, Grok and Reddit Pick Posts
Social AI search tools write answers from public posts instead of web pages. Meta AI Mode reads Facebook posts, Groups and Reels, Grok searches X and the web, Reddit's AI search summarizes threads, and Meta's Forum app answers from Facebook Groups. For brands, what customers and the brand post in public now decides what each tool says.
What is social AI search and how is it different from web AI search?
Social AI search is an answer tool that builds a written response from public posts, comments and discussion threads rather than from indexed web pages. Web-based tools such as Google AI Mode, Perplexity and ChatGPT search retrieve pages that a publisher or brand controls. Social tools retrieve what other people said, which a brand can influence but cannot edit.
That difference changes the work. A web page can be corrected by its owner, while a customer's Group post or a Reddit comment stays as written. A brand's job moves from fixing its own pages to adding accurate public statements next to the ones it does not control, and to answering early. Four tools now make that shift visible in one year.
How do Meta AI Mode, Grok, Reddit and Forum compare?
The four tools read different public corpora, and only some of them have confirmed how they show sources. The table below lists what each reads, when it launched in its current form and what is known about source display.
Tool
What it reads
Current form
Source display
Meta AI Mode
Public Facebook posts, comments, Group discussions and Reels
Search tab in Facebook, launched June 15, 2026
Not confirmed by Meta in launch coverage
Grok
Live X posts and web results
Assistant on X, grok.com and mobile apps
Lists cited sources, including X posts, per vendor guides
Reddit AI search

Meta AI Mode is the broadest, and the guide to Meta AI Mode and Facebook search covers what it reads and what Meta has not disclosed. Grok also searches the open web, so its answers can mix X posts with ordinary pages, and the Grok for PR guide covers its plans, data handling and a five-question brand check.
Reddit's tool began as Reddit Answers, which Search Engine Journal reported at its December 2024 launch. Reddit's announcement page now says Reddit Answers is merged into Reddit search for one unified experience, and the help page describes it as AI search reached through an Ask button, according to Search Engine Journal's September 2026 report.
Forum arrived without a press release. Press reports describe it as a Reddit-style app built on Facebook Groups, with an Ask tab that compiles answers from discussions across a user's groups and a separate AI assistant for group administrators. Engadget and CNBC reported that Reddit's shares fell more than 5% on the news.
Which posts do social AI tools choose?
The only published audit of post selection covers Reddit, and it found that formal, early and already-popular comments were chosen most often. Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign posted the preprint, which Search Engine Journal reported on September 17, 2026. They ran 10,000 questions through Reddit's AI search three times, analyzed 30,000 answers and traced them through 14.68 million comments from 20 advice and support subreddits.
Finding
Result
Formal language
A comment one standard deviation more formal had 49% higher odds of being selected
Personal experience language
Comments with more first-person and past-tense markers had lower odds of selection
Vote ranking in the thread
The median selected comment sat at the 91st percentile for score, against the 45th for comments not chosen
Position in the thread
92% of selected comments were direct replies to the original post
Timing
Selected comments appeared a median of 1.2 hours after the post, against 5.9 hours for others
External links
Comments containing a link had an odds ratio of 2.25
The written answers also dropped nearly all first-person language, from 3.3% of words in the quoted comments to 0.06% in the answers. The authors state that the study is observational and should not be read as causal, and the paper has not been peer reviewed. The findings cover advice and support communities and may not carry over to other parts of Reddit or to the other three tools.
No equivalent audit exists yet for Meta AI Mode, Grok or Forum. Everything-PR's own analysis put Reddit at 40.1% citation share across AI answers in The Reddit Files, so the Reddit result matters even for brands that never use Reddit's own search.
What do the four tools have in common?
All four draw only on public content, reward recent and specific material, and leave the brand with little control over what other people wrote. Those shared traits explain why the same habits help across all of them.
Private messages, closed groups and private accounts sit outside what the tools describe reading. Recent posts have an edge: vendors report that Grok can cite X posts from the last 30 minutes, and the Reddit audit found that selected comments arrived early in a thread. Meta and xAI have not said how their tools choose among posts, and Reddit's audit tied selection to votes.
The missing ranking rules matter most for planning. A brand cannot read a ranking rule and comply, so the practical approach is to test each tool repeatedly and fix what the answers get wrong.
What should PR teams do across all four?
PR teams should map where customers discuss the brand, test each tool with the same questions, and answer early with sourced, specific replies. The steps below apply to all four tools.
List the places where customers discuss the brand in public: Facebook Groups, relevant subreddits and X accounts and threads.
Ask each tool the same five buyer questions every month, and save every answer with the date and tool name.
Open the sources behind each answer and note which posts and threads supplied the claims about the brand.
Reply early in those threads as an identified brand representative, with specific facts and a link to a primary source, and follow each community's rules.
Keep the brand's own public posts current on each platform, including hours, prices, product names and recent announcements.
Measure mentions, citations and AI-assistant referral sessions, because clicks understate what a social AI answer does.
The reply advice follows the Reddit audit, which linked early, formal and linked comments with selection. That is an association, so teams should treat it as a test to run and not a rule. The guide on how Reddit leads AI citations describes how PR teams have run those tests across engines.
Which tool should a brand prioritize first?
A brand should start with the tool that matches where its customers already talk in public. This is an editorial judgment that Everything-PR has not tested, so teams should confirm it with their own prompts.
If customers mostly talk on
Start with
Why
Facebook Groups and local community pages
Meta AI Mode and Forum
Both read Group discussions and public Facebook posts
X, news cycles and developer or investor circles
Grok
It searches X posts live alongside the web
Advice, support and product-comparison threads

The audit covered advice and support communities
Brands in consumer categories with heavy forum discussion should test all four, because the same complaint can appear on several platforms. The report on why Reddit works as the judgment layer of AI answers explains why those threads carry so much weight.
Summary: What should brands know about social AI search?
Meta AI Mode, Grok, Reddit's AI search and Meta's Forum app all build answers from public posts.
The one published audit, on Reddit, linked selection with formal, early, highly voted and linked comments, and it is observational.
Neither Meta nor xAI has published how its tool ranks posts, so repeated testing is the reliable method.
Brands should reply early with sourced facts, keep their own posts current and track mentions rather than clicks.
Social AI search is an answer tool that writes a response from public posts, comments and threads instead of from indexed web pages. Meta AI Mode, Grok, Reddit's AI search and Meta's Forum app are the four main examples as of November 2026.
Is Reddit Answers still a separate product?
No. Reddit's announcement page says Reddit Answers merged into Reddit search on May 26, 2026, and the help page now calls the feature AI search, reached through an Ask button, according to Search Engine Journal.
What is Meta's Forum app?
Meta's Forum is a Reddit-style app built on Facebook Groups that was released in the US App Store on May 22, 2026. It includes an Ask tab that compiles answers from discussions across a user's groups.
Can a brand control what social AI tools say about it?
A brand cannot edit what customers post, so it cannot fully control the answers. It can add accurate public statements, reply early with sourced facts and check each tool's answers regularly.
Do social AI tools replace web search for brands?
No. Web-based tools such as Google AI Mode, Perplexity and ChatGPT still read pages that brands control, so social AI search adds a second surface that depends on public posts. Sources and limits of this article The Reddit selection findings come from a University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign preprint as reported by Search Engine Journal on September 17, 2026, which is observational and not peer reviewed. Forum launch details come from press reports including Engadget, CNBC and Business Standard. Grok claims about live X search and post recency come from vendors that sell AI visibility tracking. Meta had not disclosed how Meta AI Mode selects posts or whether it shows sources in the coverage reviewed. The prioritization table is an editorial judgment, not a tested result.
