Instant Checkout (OpenAI)
Instant Checkout is OpenAI's commerce surface inside ChatGPT, enabling product purchase directly from an AI response without leaving the engine. Announced October 14, 2025, with Walmart named among the founding launch partners. The single feature that turned ChatGPT from a recommendation engine into a sales channel.
Mechanically, Instant Checkout binds three things into one flow:
- Product surfacing — partner retailers' SKUs appear directly in the AI response when ChatGPT determines a transactional intent.
- In-engine cart — the shopper assembles the order inside the ChatGPT surface, not on the retailer's site.
- Native payment — checkout is completed via the partner's payment integration, with order confirmation returning inside ChatGPT itself.
The Walmart announcement on October 14, 2025 drove the stock to an all-time-high closing price of $107.21 the same day. The strategic significance was understood immediately: ChatGPT had not become a retailer, but it had become a retail channel — and Walmart had secured anchor placement on it.
Instant Checkout is the OpenAI counterpart to Gemini's Universal Commerce Protocol (announced January 11, 2026, also with Walmart as the anchor partner). The two together represent the highest-leverage commerce surface inside answer engines in the current cycle. Target launched a more limited ChatGPT app integration on November 19, 2025 — one engine, beta scope, no Gemini equivalent.
