Sidwell Wins, 28 Schools Flunk: First AI Curriculum Index Ranks Every DC Prep School

The Washington DC Private School AI Curriculum Index 2026, published by 5W AI Communications, is the first study to score the capital region's private schools on whether they actually teach artificial intelligence or still coast on the STEM label they adopted in 2016.

Thirty schools. Five dimensions. Two pass.

The Rankings

Sidwell Friends School ranks #1 with an AI Index of 88.4, highest on four of five dimensions. The Quaker school's progressive model embeds AI across disciplines. Faculty development includes AI-specific training. The school's proximity to senators, cabinet members, and the agencies that fund and regulate AI produces an AI-ethics curriculum no peer matches.

Georgetown Day School ranks #2 at 84.2, leading the index on Specificity (88). GDS names AI explicitly in course titles where peers hide behind "innovation" and "technology." Naming the discipline matters. It's the difference between a curriculum commitment and a brochure claim.

Those are the only two Tier A schools. The gap to #3 (St. Albans at 76.8) is 7.4 points. That gap is structural, not incremental.

The Classical Problem

DC's prep school tradition is classical: Latin, rhetoric, philosophy, Ivy League feeder. That tradition produces extraordinary admissions outcomes and genuine intellectual depth. It does not produce AI engineers.

The metro area with more AI policy infrastructure than anywhere on earth (DARPA, the National Science Foundation, the White House OSTP, Georgetown's Center for Security and Emerging Technology) graduates prep school students who understand what the government regulates better than they understand how to build it.

Policy awareness is not production capacity. The index measures production capacity.

By the Numbers

Tier A (≥ 80): 2 schools. Sidwell Friends (88.4), Georgetown Day (84.2).

Tier B (60–79.9): 16 schools. St. Albans (76.8) through Stone Ridge (60.2). Real CS programs. Growing AI awareness. Not named AI commitment.

Tier C (below 60): 12 schools. Georgetown Visitation (58.6) through St. John's College High (45.8). Near-zero measurable AI curriculum depth.

Schools teaching GEO: Zero. Consistent with every edition of the 5W AI Higher Education Index.

Bullis School Is Moving Fastest

Bullis in Potomac (75.2) posts the highest Recency score (78) in Tier B, meaning its AI curriculum investment is more recent and more aggressive than schools that rank above it. Innovation center expansion, new CS hires, STEM infrastructure build. The 9.0-point gap to Tier A is closeable in one to two academic cycles.

The Maryland-Virginia Split

Montgomery County averages 64.7 across eight schools. Fairfax/Loudoun averages 59.5 across five. DC proper averages 66.9, but strip out Sidwell and GDS, and it drops to 56.3. The two Tier A schools distort the average. The baseline is the same everywhere: most of these schools do not teach AI as a named discipline.

What the Study Measures

Five dimensions, weighted: Curriculum Depth (25%), Specificity (25%), Integration (20%), Recency (15%), Partnerships (15%). Data drawn from institutional websites, published course catalogs, strategic plans, faculty directories, and AI-engine citation queries (30 DC-adapted prompts × 5 engines × Q2 2026).

The framework is adapted from the 5W AI Higher Education Index 2026, which scored 50 universities globally and found the same GEO gap at every institution measured.
