Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing and structuring a page so a search feature or AI assistant can lift a direct answer to a specific question from it. AEO covers featured snippets, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. Google says its AI features need no special optimization, so AEO starts with sound SEO plus answer-first writing.

AEO is a page-level discipline: each page answers one question clearly enough that a machine can quote it. The points below are the whole argument in brief.
AEO targets the direct answer to one question, not a ranking position in a list of links.
AEO is its own discipline. It is not SEO, and it is not GEO, which works on whether a brand is named across a whole category.
Google states that the best practices for SEO remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that no additional requirements apply.
The core habit is an answer of roughly 40 to 80 words directly under a question-shaped heading, with a named source for any number.
AEO is measured per question: whether the page is cited, how often, and what visibility it earns, judged by impressions, position, AI-assistant referral sessions and citations rather than clicks alone.
What Does AEO Stand For and What Does It Cover?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization, and it covers any surface that returns a direct answer instead of only a list of links. An answer engine is a search feature or assistant that reads several pages and presents one answer, with or without citations.
The label is older than generative AI. Practitioners tied it to featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and voice assistants, where the goal was to be the single passage a search engine displayed or read aloud. The same label now covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, because each of them lifts passages from pages into an answer.
EPR treats AEO and GEO as two different jobs with different units of work. AEO is about a page answering a question. GEO is about an entity being named across a category. Other publishers and vendors blur the two or use one as a synonym for the other, which is why EPR's AEO vs GEO vs SEO comparison spells out the split and gives buyers a test for what an agency is actually selling.
AEO differs from SEO in what it tries to win, and from GEO in the unit it works on. SEO competes for a position in a ranked list, AEO competes to be the quoted passage, and GEO competes to be the named entity in a category answer.
The disciplines share a foundation without being the same work. A page that crawlers cannot read cannot be quoted, and a brand that no independent source describes is rarely named. EPR's guide to generative engine optimization covers the entity side, and PR vs GEO explains where earned media fits.
What Does Google Say About Optimizing for AI Answers?
Google says there is nothing extra to do. Its Search Central guide, AI features and your website, states that the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no additional requirements to appear in them nor other special optimizations necessary.
The same guide lists the basics: allow crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting layer, make content easy to find through internal links, provide a good page experience, and keep important content available as text. It also notes that sites appearing in AI features are counted in the overall search traffic in Search Console, so the appearances are not reported separately.
Two limits matter. The guidance describes Google's own AI features, not ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity, which retrieve and cite by their own methods. And it describes what a page needs to be eligible, not what makes a brand the one an assistant names. That second question belongs to GEO.
What Does an Answer-Ready Page Look Like?
An answer-ready page opens every section with a complete answer that still makes sense when quoted alone. The structure is simple enough to repeat on every page that matters.
Write the heading as the question a buyer would type, such as "How much does a PR retainer cost?"
Answer it in the first sentence, then in 40 to 80 words, naming the subject instead of using a pronoun.
Attach one sourced fact: a number with the publisher and date in the same sentence.
Add the detail below the answer: the reasoning, an example, and a table where comparison is the natural format.
Show a visible updated date and the author, so a reader and a crawler can both judge freshness.
Keep the page readable as plain text, because an engine that cannot see the text cannot quote it.
A weak opening says that search is changing and brands must adapt. A strong opening says what AEO is, what it covers and what Google says about it, which is exactly how this page begins. The second version can be quoted by an assistant, read aloud by a voice device or cited by a journalist without losing its meaning.
Which Surfaces Does AEO Target?
AEO targets every surface that shows an answer, and each surface rewards slightly different habits. The table lists the main ones and what the page can do for each.
Surface
What it shows
What the page can do
Featured snippets and People Also Ask
One extracted passage above or beside the results
Put a short, direct answer under a question heading
Google AI Overviews
A generated summary with supporting links
Be indexed, crawlable and clearly written, as for SEO
Google AI Mode
A conversational answer with follow-up questions
Cover the follow-up questions a buyer asks next on the same page or a linked page
ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot
A synthesized answer, often with citations
Publish sourced facts and keep the same facts consistent across the site
For the engine-specific view, EPR's guide to ranking on Google AI Overviews goes deeper on the largest of these surfaces.
How Do You Measure AEO?
AEO is measured per question, because each page is built to answer one. The useful measures are the ones that show whether the answer is being used.
Whether the page is cited or only present for each target question, checked repeatedly because answers vary from run to run.
Impressions and average position in Search Console, which include AI feature appearances inside the overall totals.
Sessions referred by AI assistants, visible in analytics where the assistant sends a referrer.
How often the page is cited across engines for a fixed set of prompts, held constant from one period to the next.
Clicks alone understate the result. Pew Research Center found that in March 2025 Google users clicked a result link in 8% of visits that showed an AI summary, against 15% of visits without one. An answer can be quoted, seen and trusted without a visit, which is why impressions and citations belong in the report. EPR's Citation Share metric covers the category-level measure that belongs to GEO.
What Should an AEO Audit Check?
An AEO audit checks whether each priority page can be found, read and quoted. Eight checks cover most of the gain.
The page is indexed and not blocked by robots.txt, a CDN rule or a noindex tag.
Every main heading is phrased as a question a buyer would ask.
The first sentence under each heading answers it without relying on earlier text.
Each number has a named source and date in the same sentence.
The page shows an updated date and a named author.
Facts such as legal name, founding date, pricing and leadership match across the site and other profiles.
Comparisons sit in a real table rather than an image or a script-built widget.
The page links to the next question a buyer is likely to ask.
Which Mistakes Hurt AEO Most?
The most damaging AEO mistakes come from treating the work as a trick. Four recur.
The first is expecting FAQ markup to produce rich results. In August 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites, so the markup helps organize a page but rarely creates a visible feature. The second is publishing a long opening that delays the answer, which leaves nothing quotable in the first lines. The third is letting facts drift, so one page states a price or date that another page contradicts. The fourth is measuring once, because a single check shows one possible answer and not a pattern.
Who Should Own AEO Inside a Company?
AEO sits best with the team that controls page content and structure, usually search or web, with communications supplying the facts and the independent coverage that supports them. Someone has to own the report as well, because the question set must stay fixed for the numbers to mean anything. EPR's GEO services cost guide and its ranking of GEO PR agencies show how outside help is priced and judged, and the same questions apply to AEO work.
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the practice of structuring content so a search feature or AI assistant can lift a direct answer to a specific question.
Is AEO different from SEO?
Yes, in what it tries to win. SEO competes for a ranking position, and AEO competes to be the quoted answer. Google says SEO best practices remain relevant for its AI features, so the two overlap heavily.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
No. AEO works on a page answering one question. GEO works on an entity being named across a category. They share a foundation of readable pages, but the work, the deliverables and the measures differ, so they should not be sold or reported as one thing.
Does Google require anything special for AI Overviews?
No. Google's Search Central guidance says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no other special optimizations necessary.
How do you measure AEO?
Track whether each target page is cited for a fixed set of questions, plus impressions, average position and AI-assistant referral sessions. Repeat each check, because answers vary between runs.
Does FAQ schema help AEO?
It helps organize a page, but Google limited FAQ rich results to government and health sites in 2023, so it rarely produces a visible search feature on its own.
How much does AEO cost?
No standard AEO-only price exists. EPR's GEO services cost guide reports $10,000 to $50,000+ a month at agencies and $29 to $1,000+ a month for tracking tools, so the sensible test is what the work delivers and how it is reported.
Where should a team start with AEO?
Start with the ten pages that answer the questions buyers ask first. Rewrite each opening as a direct, sourced answer, confirm the page is crawlable, and set a fixed question list to track.
