What did ChatGPT change in October 2026?

OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes list the month's changes. The largest is GPT-6 with Intelligent UI on Oct 7, which lets ChatGPT answer with interactive elements and begin answering while it keeps thinking or using tools. TechCrunch described the interface as including tappable buttons, custom calculators and editable charts.

  • Oct 1: A "Try on" button appears on clothing and accessory listings, and users can save products to Favorites or folders in their Library.
  • Oct 2: Finances expands to Free and Go users in the U.S.
  • Oct 7: GPT-6 and Intelligent UI launch.
  • Oct 15: GPT-Live-1.1 adds new voices, including French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish options.
  • Oct 20: Locked chats hide selected conversations from regular history and search, and roll out gradually to Free, Go, Plus and Pro users.

What changed in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

On Oct 15, Google published "More ways to connect with the web from Search" on its Keyword blog, written by Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management. The post lists inline links, a dedicated section that highlights official websites, updated news carousels, visual related-article links and clickable creator profiles. Trade coverage by Search Engine Land adds that inline links appear higher and more often in responses.

  1. Inline links sit inside words and phrases in AI answers and show up higher in the response.
  2. Official websites section highlights brand and organization sites for some queries. Trade coverage describes this as a test, so availability may vary.
  3. News carousels expand to more locations and languages and to a wider range of queries.
  4. Related-article links at the end of responses gain image thumbnails.
  5. Creator profiles become clickable on videos in AI Mode and open a Google profile page.

Google also said use of its Preferred Sources feature has grown more than sevenfold since the start of the year, without giving a baseline number.

What did the Gemini app add?

The Gemini app release notes show that Gemini 4 Argon began rolling out globally on Oct 13 for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Google describes it as its newest frontier model for complex tasks. The Gemini API release notes list the same model as generally available on Oct 13. Our permanent page on Gemini vs ChatGPT covers how the two engines differ, so this digest stays with the dated change.

What did Perplexity change?

On Oct 20, Perplexity announced a local-first mode for Computer in its Mac app, which lets the model and the agent run on the device, including without an internet connection. 9to5Mac reported the launch, and other outlets report it is available to Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers on Macs with at least 36GB of unified memory. Earlier in the month, Perplexity's Oct 5 changelog added Automations and inline charts to Computer, according to third-party trackers.

What does this mean for PR?

The clearest PR signal this month is Google's work to put source links higher in AI answers. If a brand's newsroom, official site or original reporting is the cited source, the chance that a reader clicks through has grown. ChatGPT's Intelligent UI points the same way for shopping and finance topics, where answers become interactive tools instead of paragraphs. Treat these as areas to watch rather than proven changes in traffic, since neither company has published click data.

What should communications teams do this month?

  • Check that your official site, newsroom and leadership pages are accurate, crawlable and easy to cite.
  • Test ten brand questions in each engine and record which pages are linked.
  • Review product and pricing pages that may feed shopping answers in ChatGPT.
  • Note which engines show a creator or publisher profile for your spokespeople.
  • Read how AI answer engines decide which brands they cite before changing your plan.
