Track Brand Visibility in AI Search: 4 Metrics to Watch

To track brand visibility in AI search, run a fixed set of buyer prompts on each AI engine every month, record whether the brand is mentioned and cited, and compare the results with competitors and with referral traffic in analytics. MADX Digital's July 2026 guide names four metrics for this: citation frequency, AI share of voice, AI-referred traffic and the competitive citation gap. The same prompts must be re-run each time so the numbers can be compared.

Last updated: October 30, 2026. Formulas and benchmarks come from named vendors and agencies, and several of them sell tracking tools, so treat their figures as vendor claims.

Summary

  • Tracking means running the same buyer prompts on a schedule, not checking an engine once.
  • Four metrics cover most reporting: citation frequency, AI share of voice, AI-referred traffic and the competitive citation gap.
  • Analytics undercounts AI visits, so referral traffic is a floor, not the full count.
  • Free methods work for a small prompt set, and paid tools start at about $29 a month.

What does it mean to track brand visibility in AI search?

Tracking brand visibility in AI search means measuring how often ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews name or cite a brand when buyers ask category questions. It replaces rank in a list of links with presence inside a generated answer.

An answer can include a brand in three ways: a mention without a link, a citation that links to the brand's own page, or a recommendation that names the brand as a choice. EPR's guide to Citation Share defines the share of answers in which a brand is named, and the six-step GEO citation audit shows how to run the first baseline.

Results differ sharply by engine. Everything-PR's Google Analytics 4 data shows AI assistants sent 760 sessions to its own site in the 30 days to October 29, 2026, down 22% from 971 in the prior 30 days. Gemini sent 469 of those sessions, Perplexity 119, Claude 80, ChatGPT 51 and Copilot 41, so a tracker that covers one engine misses most of the picture.

Which four metrics show brand visibility in AI search?

Four metrics show brand visibility in AI search: citation frequency, AI share of voice, AI-referred traffic and the competitive citation gap. The table gives a working formula for each.

MADX Digital's July 2026 guide says to track these metrics across a fixed prompt set, re-run them monthly and split them by platform. It also suggests that a share of voice under 15% points to a citation gap, and that 25% to 40% is a reasonable goal. That benchmark comes from a vendor guide, not an audited study.

How do you build the prompt set?

A prompt set should mirror the questions real buyers ask, written as fixed text so every monthly run uses identical wording. A DEV Community framework suggests 20 to 30 prompts a month across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude as a starting size.

  1. List the questions buyers ask before they hire or buy, such as comparison, cost and "best" queries in the category.
  2. Write each question as a prompt and freeze the wording.
  3. Group prompts by buyer role, since a marketing chief and a founder ask different questions.
  4. Run every prompt on each engine on the same day each month.
  5. Record whether the brand is mentioned, whether its page is cited, and which competitors appear.
  6. Repeat each prompt more than once, because AI answers change between runs.

The prompts where competitors appear and the brand does not form the competitive citation gap. Those prompts become the content to-do list, and the five GEO metrics guide explains how to turn them into a score.

How do you find AI referral traffic in analytics?

AI referral traffic is found by filtering analytics sessions by the source names of AI assistants, such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Brainlabs Digital notes that GA4 and Adobe Analytics categorize visits from ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity as referral traffic, and Pixis explains that GA4 can identify an AI visit only when the visit carries referrer information.

The count is incomplete. Polaris Agency reports that GA4 does not recognize most AI platforms as referral sources by default and files those visits as direct, and MADX Digital says GA4 undercounts AI traffic because referrers get stripped. Erlin notes that Perplexity shows clickable citations in every response, so its traffic is the easiest to see.

Airefs adds that ChatGPT often recommends brands without a link, so a buyer who acts on a recommendation can arrive as direct traffic. A signup question that asks how the buyer heard about the brand, with an AI assistant as one answer, fills part of that gap.

What do free and paid tracking tools cover?

Free methods cover a small prompt set run by hand plus analytics referral data, and paid tools run the prompt set automatically on a schedule. MADX Digital lists Peec AI as a paid prompt-level tracker and Ahrefs Brand Radar as starting from $129 a month with a free tier.

EPR's GEO services cost guide puts AI visibility tracking tools at roughly $29 to $1,000 or more a month, depending on prompts and engines tracked. Platform profiles on EPR cover Semrush's AI visibility push and Brandlight's enterprise platform.

A tool reports whether a brand appears, and someone still has to change pages and earn coverage. The decision rule is the same as for GEO services: buy a tool when an in-house team can act on the data.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a brand run its AI visibility prompts?

Run the full prompt set monthly, as MADX Digital recommends, and keep the wording fixed. AI answers change between runs, so one-off checks cannot show a trend.

How many prompts should a brand track?

A DEV Community framework suggests 20 to 30 prompts a month as a starting point across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. Larger programs track hundreds, and paid tools such as Peec AI automate the runs.

Can Google Analytics show traffic from ChatGPT?

Yes, when the visit carries referrer information. Brainlabs Digital says GA4 categorizes visits from ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity as referral traffic, but other guides report that some AI visits appear as direct traffic, so the count is a minimum.

What is AI share of voice?

AI share of voice is the brand's share of all brand mentions across a fixed prompt set. A DEV Community framework gives the formula as the brand's mentions divided by total brand mentions, times 100.

Can a brand track AI visibility for free?

Yes, at a smaller scale. A hand-run prompt set and analytics referral data are free, and SEOcrawl notes that Google Search Console shows AI Overviews appearances for Google.

Does a mention count the same as a citation?

No. A mention names the brand in the answer text, and a citation links to a page. Tracking both shows whether engines recognize the brand and whether they send readers to its pages.
