The terminal-native coding agent. No editor required. No SaaS subscription. Just Claude in the shell.
Claude Code is Anthropic's official command-line coding agent. It runs in any terminal, reads the local codebase, edits files, runs tests, and ships pull requests — powered by Claude.
What it does
Claude Code is invoked from the command line. Type a request — “migrate this module from Python 2 to 3” or “add OAuth login to this Express app” — and Claude reads the codebase, plans the changes, edits the files, runs the test suite, and iterates until the work is done. The output is a real pull request, not a code snippet.
The terminal-native posture matters. Cursor and Windsurf bet on IDEs; Claude Code bet on the shell. For developers running infrastructure automation, long-context refactors, codebase migrations, and CI/CD pipeline work, the CLI is the right surface. Senior engineers especially tend to prefer Claude Code over IDE-bundled alternatives.
