How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT: 7 Steps and 6 Causes

To get recommended by ChatGPT, make a brand easy to retrieve and easy to trust: let OpenAI's search crawler read the site, publish pages that answer buyer questions in plain text, and earn mentions on independent sources that ChatGPT cites. This guide gives seven steps, six reasons a brand gets left out, and a monthly check that shows what changed.

Updated November 2, 2026.

Summary

  • OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, so crawler access is the first check.
  • Muck Rack's May 2026 analysis found earned media, broadly defined, made up 84% of AI citations, and paid or advertorial content made up 0.3%.
  • Seven steps cover access, answer pages, independent coverage, consistent facts and measurement.
  • Six causes explain most cases where ChatGPT leaves a brand out, and each has a check and a fix.
  • No source guarantees a recommendation, so track the same prompts every month.

How Does ChatGPT Decide Which Brands to Recommend?

ChatGPT recommends brands that appear in the sources it retrieves or has learned from, and it usually shows where an answer came from. In Muck Rack's May 2026 What Is AI Reading? report, ChatGPT cited sources in 96% of responses, against 82% for Gemini and 55% for Claude. A brand with no retrievable page that names it for a question has nothing for ChatGPT to cite, however strong the product is.

OpenAI publishes how its crawlers work in its overview of OpenAI crawlers. Three of them matter for brands, and OpenAI says each setting is independent of the others.

OpenAI user agentWhat OpenAI says it doesWhat blocking it means, per OpenAI
OAI-SearchBotSurfaces websites in search results in ChatGPT's search featuresSites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links
GPTBotCrawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's generative AI foundation modelsDisallowing it indicates a site's content should not be used for training
ChatGPT-UserVisits a page when a user asks ChatGPT or a custom GPT a question that needs itBecause the visit is user-initiated, robots.txt rules may not apply, and it is not used to decide whether content appears in Search

The second body of evidence is about which sources get cited. Muck Rack's May 2026 edition analyzed more than 25 million links from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini across 17 industries. It reported that earned media drove 84% of citations and paid or advertorial content 0.3%. Muck Rack counts journalism, academic research, government sources, encyclopedic sites and third-party corporate content as earned, and journalism alone was about 27% in May. Its October 2026 edition, as reported by Unite.AI, put journalism at 22%, with earned and third-party sources still near 84%.

Read the 84% with care. PR Daily's critique, The 84% myth, notes the May study tested only three chatbots and that the headline claim deserves scrutiny. The broad definition of earned media means the figure does not say 84% of citations come from news stories.

What Are the Seven Steps to Get Recommended by ChatGPT?

The seven steps move from access to content to independent proof to measurement, and the early steps cost the least. Each step names how to check it.

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot. Open your site's robots.txt and look for a Disallow rule that names OAI-SearchBot or blocks every user agent. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot and its published IP ranges, and says search can take about 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt change.
  2. Decide on GPTBot separately. Opting out of training crawls does not remove a site from ChatGPT search, because OpenAI treats the two settings as independent. Make this a policy decision, not a visibility fix.
  3. Put the answer in plain text at the top of the page. A page whose first paragraph answers the buyer's question in full sentences is easier to quote than one that makes a reader scroll. This is EPR's working practice, not a rule OpenAI documents.
  4. Match the questions buyers actually type. Write one page per question, with the question as the heading and the answer in the first sentence under it. Pricing, comparison and "best for" questions are the usual starting points.
  5. Earn independent coverage. Because earned media dominated the Muck Rack sample, a brand mentioned only on its own site is thinly corroborated. Run 20 buyer questions, open every source ChatGPT cites, and list the outlets that appear. Those are the outlets to pitch with data, expert commentary or a published study. The PR and SEO strategy guide covers the pitching method.
  6. Make the facts match everywhere. Use one company name, one description, one location and one set of prices across your site, LinkedIn, directories and any reference entry the brand qualifies for. Muck Rack's release names Wikipedia as ChatGPT's most cited domain, but an entry must meet that site's notability rules and should never be promotional.
  7. Measure every month with the same prompts. The next sections show how, and the six-step citation audit gives the full method.

Why Does ChatGPT Not Mention Your Brand? Six Causes to Check

ChatGPT leaves a brand out for six common reasons, and each one has a check you can run in under an hour. Work down the table in order, because the first row blocks everything after it.

CauseHow to checkHow to fix
1. The crawler is blockedRead robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot rules, and check server logs for OAI-SearchBot visitsAllow OAI-SearchBot and OpenAI's published IP ranges, then retest after about 24 hours
2. No page answers the questionSearch your own site for the exact buyer question and read the first paragraph of the best matchPublish a page whose first paragraph answers it directly
3. No independent source names the brandRun the prompt, open each cited source and note whether any page you do not control mentions youEarn coverage on the sources ChatGPT already cites for that question
4. Facts conflict across sourcesCompare name, description, location and pricing on your site, LinkedIn and directoriesCorrect the outliers and standardize one description
5. The answer sits behind a gateOpen the page in a private window with scripts off and see whether the answer text still appearsMove a plain-text answer outside the login, script or paywall. EPR's Paywall Visibility Index covers the evidence, which is mixed
6. The question does not trigger a lookupCheck whether the answer shows sources. OpenAI says ChatGPT may visit a page when a user asks, not that it always doesBuild presence on sources that engines retrieve over time, and retest monthly

How Should You Measure Progress?

Measure progress by running the same prompts on the same schedule and recording every result. ChatGPT answers can differ from run to run, so a single check proves little.

  1. Write 20 to 50 prompts that buyers in your category type, including comparison and "best for" questions.
  2. Run each prompt three times in one session type and record each run.
  3. Log the date, the prompt, whether the brand was named, its position in the answer, the sources cited and the competitors named.
  4. Repeat monthly and compare the same prompts, not new ones.

The row above is an example of the format, not a real result. For tools that automate the log, see EPR's comparison of AI visibility tools, and for a fuller baseline see The AI Visibility Audit.

What Does the Research Say, and What Are Its Limits?

The research supports a short list of actions and does not support promises. Three limits apply to everything above.

  • OpenAI's documentation explains how its crawlers work. It does not describe how ChatGPT chooses brands for an answer, so no one outside OpenAI can state that rule.
  • Muck Rack measures the composition of the citations it sampled across three chatbots in May, and four in October. That does not show that earned coverage causes a citation, or that any one placement will be cited.
  • Engines differ. Muck Rack's May release reports that Claude's most cited domain is PubMed Central and Gemini's is Reddit, so a tactic that works for one engine may not carry over. EPR's AI Platform Citation Source Index tracks the differences, and the guide to generative engine optimization explains the wider discipline.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my brand recommended by ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot, publish pages that answer buyer questions in plain text, and earn coverage from independent outlets ChatGPT cites. Then rerun a fixed prompt set every month to see what changed.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Buying coverage is a weak route to citations, because Muck Rack found paid and advertorial content was 0.3% of cited links in its May 2026 sample. OpenAI's developer site also lists an advertising product for ChatGPT, and this guide covers organic recommendations only.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my brand from ChatGPT?

No, according to OpenAI. GPTBot relates to training, and OAI-SearchBot controls whether a site is shown in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI says each setting is independent.

How long does it take for a robots.txt change to work?

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours for its search systems to adjust after a robots.txt update. Citations from new pages and new coverage take longer, and EPR is not aware of an independent study that sets a standard timeline.

Do I need a Wikipedia page to be recommended?

No. Muck Rack's release names Wikipedia as ChatGPT's most cited domain, but an entry requires meeting the site's notability rules and a promotional entry can be removed. Focus on accurate, independently sourced facts first.

Does the same advice work for Claude, Gemini and Perplexity?

Partly. Access, answer pages and independent coverage apply to every engine, but the sources differ by engine. Muck Rack's May release reports Claude's top domain as PubMed Central and Gemini's as Reddit, so check each engine separately.
