PR Jobs and AI: 12 of 50 Postings Name AI Skills or Duties

Twelve of 50 U.S. public relations job postings reviewed by Everything-PR on October 24, 2026, from agencies such as Highwire and employers such as Coinbase and Databricks, named AI tools as a core qualification or assigned AI work as a duty. Five listed AI-tool skills as core and seven assigned AI work. Writing appeared in 47 postings and media relations in 37.

The review found:

  • 12 of 50 postings (24%) name AI tools in a core qualification or an assigned duty
  • None of the six entry-level postings listed an AI-tool qualification or duty
  • Writing appeared in 47 postings, media relations in 37 and measurement in 30
  • Two postings name answer engine optimization (AEO), and none names GEO
  • 47 postings disclosed pay, but only 19 stated that the amount is annual

How many PR jobs mention AI?

Twelve of the 50 postings, or 24%, mention AI tools in a core qualification or an assigned duty. The table separates AI skills an employer wants before hiring from AI work an employer assigns after hiring.

AI-tool language in the postingPostingsShare of all 50
Core candidate qualification510%
Preferred qualification only00%
Assigned duty, no core AI-tool qualification714%
General ideal-candidate description only12%
No qualifying AI-tool expectation found3774%

The strict count of 12 adds the five core-qualification postings to the seven duty-only postings. A thirteenth posting, Airbnb's Host Communications Strategy Lead, describes an AI-fluent ideal candidate in general prose, so it sits outside the count.

Five postings put AI-tool skills in core qualifications. Attentive's Senior Manager, Strategic Communications lists familiarity with Claude and ChatGPT for reporting, analysis and resourcing. Coinbase's policy and public affairs manager and internal communications manager postings both list responsible generative AI use. Chime's corporate communications manager seeks hands-on experience building AI tools and workflows, and Databricks asks for AI-tool fluency with a record of applying it to communications work.

Seven postings assign AI work without making prior AI-tool experience a core qualification. Engine's two internal communications roles assign the creation of agents and automations. Point72 assigns AI and automation to monitoring, reporting and data tracking, and Elemental Impact assigns AI-tool exploration across communications workflows. Highwire's senior account executive posting for cybersecurity is the one agency role in the strict count.

Which skills do PR employers still ask for most?

PR employers in this sample still ask most often for stakeholder collaboration, project management and writing, followed by media relations. AI expectations sit on top of that skill set rather than replacing it.

Skill or functionPostings (core qualification or duty)Share of all 50
Stakeholder collaboration50100%
Project and program management4998%
Writing and editing4794%
Media relations3774%
Executive communications3366%
Analytics and measurement3060%
Social and digital communications2856%
Crisis and issues communications1734%
Internal communications1734%

Writing appeared as a core qualification in 43 postings and as an assigned duty in four more. Measurement appeared as a core qualification in 11 postings and as a duty in 19, so a job can require a communicator to measure results without asking for a specialized analytics credential.

The categories are deliberately broad. Measurement includes basic coverage reporting as well as dashboards and formal KPIs, and project management includes coordination and deadlines. The counts do not mean every posting requires advanced analytics or a project-management certification.

What is AEO, and which PR employers are hiring for it?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of shaping web content so AI answer tools, such as chatbots and AI search summaries, can find it and cite it. Two postings in the sample name AEO as a duty.

Chime's corporate communications manager is assigned to collaborate with Marketing on AEO. Lyft's Director, Product & Brand Communications is assigned a content strategy that includes AEO. Both postings place the work at the point where PR and marketing meet.

A third posting describes the same kind of work without the acronym. MongoDB's vice president of global communications role assigns influence over the sources AI systems use for answers and recommendations. No posting in the sample names GEO, and SEO wording alone was not counted. Three postings cannot show a hiring trend, but they show the work reaching communications job descriptions.

Do entry-level PR jobs require AI skills?

Entry-level PR jobs in this sample did not require AI skills: none of the six entry-level postings listed an AI-tool qualification or duty. All six listed writing and media relations.

The entry-level group is small, so the results are reported as counts, not percentages. The group includes BerlinRosen's account coordinator for real estate and LaunchSquad's graduate public relations coordinator role. LaunchSquad's posting is public, but its stated recruiting window ended in July 2026, so its current status is uncertain.

Four of the 14 intermediate postings and eight of the 30 senior postings listed AI-tool qualifications or duties. The numbers do not show a steady climb in AI expectations with seniority.

How do agency and in-house PR jobs differ?

Agency and in-house PR postings in this sample differ most in executive and internal communications, which appear mainly in in-house roles. Agency postings came from Method Communications, Interdependence, BerlinRosen, LaunchSquad, Highwire and M Booth Health. In-house postings came from employers such as Stripe, Pinterest, Figma and The New York Times, plus WPP Media, whose roles communicate for WPP Media itself.

Skill or functionAgency (11 postings)In-house (39 postings)
Writing and editing1037
Media relations1027
Executive communications429
Internal communications116
AI tools (core qualification or duty)111

These are differences within one sample. They do not show that in-house employers adopt AI faster, because the in-house group includes many technology companies and a different mix of roles and seniority than the agency group.

What do PR job postings pay?

Forty-seven of the 50 postings disclosed a numeric pay range or fixed amount, and three did not. Nineteen stated explicitly that the amount is annual, and the other 28 gave amounts without a stated pay period, so no amounts were converted or annualized.

Three internal communications manager postings with explicit annual salary wording show how far ranges can spread.

Employer and roleStated experiencePublished annual amount
Charles River Associates, Manager, Internal Communications8 to 12+ years$100,000 to $115,000
Coinbase, Internal Communications Manager7+ years$170,765 to $200,900
Anthropic, Internal Communications Manager, Tech8 to 12 years$295,000 to $345,000

These are three published ranges, not a market benchmark and not evidence of an AI pay premium. Location, sector, scope and each employer's compensation structure all differ. For market-wide figures, see the 2027 PR salary negotiation guide.

What should PR job seekers take from these postings?

PR job seekers should show the work each posting names: writing samples, media relationships, program execution and measured results, with AI skills where the employer asks for them. In this sample, writing and media relations were far more common than AI-tool language.

All six entry-level postings named writing and media relations, and none explicitly listed an AI-tool qualification or duty. That small subgroup cannot establish what entry-level employers generally require. Across the full sample, AI-tool qualifications or duties appeared in four of 14 intermediate postings and eight of 30 senior postings.

Internship postings were excluded from this review. For that segment, see PR internship pay and access. For the wider career map, see the PR careers hub and the complete PR careers guide.

Before applying, reread the responsibilities in the posting and add one concrete example for each AI-related task it names, such as a reporting workflow or an automation you built.

How the postings were reviewed

Everything-PR captured 50 distinct U.S.-eligible, non-internship PR and communications postings on October 24, 2026, with a maximum of two per employer brand. The sample covers 35 employer brands, 11 agency postings and 39 in-house postings, with six entry-level, 14 intermediate and 30 senior roles. Sources were employer career pages and the employers' own recruiting systems.

The sample is purposive, technology-heavy and senior-heavy. It is not a probability sample, an estimate of hiring volume or a study of actual hiring decisions. Coding was model-led with a review pass, not independent human double coding.

A core qualification is a skill listed in an employer's requirements section without an optional label. A duty is an activity assigned in the responsibilities. AI in a company description or recruiting policy was not counted. Two Highwire postings state they may be used to build a talent pipeline, and LaunchSquad's coordinator posting gives a recruiting window that ended in July 2026, so the 50 postings should not be read as 50 confirmed open vacancies. No employers were contacted and no applications were submitted.

Research Data and Sources

The underlying dataset contains all 50 accepted postings, including employer names, exact titles, source URLs, capture dates, experience and education requirements, AI classifications, compensation disclosures and application-status notes.

The research materials also document discovery queries, screening decisions, duplicate removal and coding definitions. Each accepted posting has a dated PDF text capture, with the original employer webpage and recruiting-system data preserved.

  • Download the 50-posting dataset - Excel
  • Download the research report, methodology and source appendix - PDF
  • Download the complete evidence package - ZIP

These materials preserve the postings as captured on October 24, 2026. Employer pages may subsequently change or disappear. Inclusion does not establish that a vacancy remains open.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do 12 PR jobs require AI experience?

No. Only five of the 12 postings list AI-tool skills as a core qualification, and the other seven assign AI work as a duty without listing it as a prehire requirement.

Does this show what all PR employers want?

No. The 50 postings are a purposive sample that leans toward technology employers and senior roles, so the findings describe these postings and not the U.S. hiring market.

Are all 50 postings open vacancies?

Not necessarily. Forty-seven appeared to accept applications without special caveats, two Highwire postings may feed a talent pipeline, and one LaunchSquad posting gives a recruiting window that ended in July 2026.

Did any PR posting name GEO?

No. Two postings name AEO, from Chime and Lyft, and MongoDB describes influence over the sources AI systems use without using either acronym.

Was AI counted if only the company description had it?

No. Company descriptions, AI as a product or sector, and recruiting policies about AI use were excluded, so only candidate skills and assigned duties count toward the 12.
