The cybersecurity publications AI engines cite most — when buyers ask which security tools and providers are best — are TechRadar, Security.org, PCWorld, Cybernews, AllAboutCookies, and TechRepublic. This is the first edition of Everything-PR's Cybersecurity Citation Rankings: a spot capture across twelve buyer-intent queries, run on Google Search, measuring which cybersecurity publications surface most as cited sources in AI-driven answers. Cybersecurity publications are defined as independent editorial outlets that publish original security news, testing, or product evaluation — with security or consumer-tech reviewing as a substantial, ongoing coverage area. Vendor and product blogs, the security tools' own sites, marketplaces, aggregators and buyer-review directories (G2, Gartner Peer Insights, Capterra), Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit are excluded.

Topline finding

On consumer buyer-intent queries — antivirus, VPN, password managers, identity theft protection — the engines cite tested-product review desks: TechRadar, Security.org, PCWorld, Cybernews, AllAboutCookies. On the enterprise questions — endpoint protection, SIEM, security awareness training, ransomware trends, threat forecasting — no qualifying independent publication surfaced at all. Vendor blogs and buyer-review aggregators own that answer box. The dedicated security trade press everyone name-drops — BleepingComputer, The Hacker News, Dark Reading, SecurityWeek, Krebs on Security, CyberScoop — did not surface as a cited source in this capture.

"In security, the trade press everyone name-drops barely surfaced. The bots learned 'which tool is best' from the review desks — TechRadar, Security.org, PCWorld. And on the enterprise questions, no publication surfaced at all; the vendors own that answer box. If you sell security and you're not inside the cited review outlets, you don't exist inside the answer. Earned media is the whole game now."

The Top 10 — Profiles

1. TechRadar

The most-cited cybersecurity source in our capture, and the only publication to surface across five distinct queries. TechRadar's expert-tested "best of" buying guides — run by a named reviews team through TechRadar and TechRadar Pro — appeared on antivirus, VPN, password managers, identity theft protection, and business firewalls. The engines treat its hands-on, methodology-disclosed product testing as a primary consumer-security signal.

Sample query: best VPN 2026
What it surfaced: The Best VPN Service 2026 guide cited alongside its antivirus, password manager, and identity theft protection roundups — the broadest footprint of any publication in the capture.

2. Security.org

A dedicated consumer-security research and review site that runs original product testing and annual population surveys on password habits, identity theft, and antivirus adoption. Surfaced on antivirus, password managers, and identity theft protection. The combination of tested product verdicts and original survey data is exactly the structured evidence LLMs elevate.

Sample query: best antivirus software 2026
What it surfaced: The Best Antivirus Software of 2026 rankings, plus its best-password-manager and best-identity-theft-protection guides across the consumer queries.

3. PCWorld

The long-running PC publication and one of the oldest tested-product franchises on the list. PCWorld's Windows antivirus reviews carry explicit lab-testing methodology and named reviewers, and surfaced on both antivirus and password manager queries. Legacy source authority is doing real work here — the engines reach for PCWorld on Windows-security buyer questions.

Sample query: best antivirus software 2026
What it surfaced: Best antivirus software for Windows PCs 2026 and its six-option password manager buying guide.

4. Cybernews

The most security-native outlet in the top tier — a dedicated cybersecurity news and research publication known for original breach investigations alongside tested product reviews. Surfaced on password managers and identity theft protection. Cybernews pairs a working research desk with hands-on review methodology, which is why it out-cited most consumer-tech generalists on the security-specific queries.

Sample query: best password managers 2026
What it surfaced: Best Password Managers 2026: Tested and Rated by Experts, plus its identity theft protection rankings.

5. AllAboutCookies

A privacy-and-security review site focused on consumer protection tools. Surfaced on antivirus and identity theft protection with tested, expert-rated buying guides. Lower brand recognition than the generalists, but the engines pull it into consumer-security answers because its content is structured as direct product evaluation.

Sample query: best identity theft protection 2026
What it surfaced: The Best Identity Theft Protection Tools of 2026 and its expert-tested antivirus guide.

6. TechRepublic

The enterprise IT and security trade publication, and one of the few B2B-oriented outlets to surface at all. TechRepublic appeared on the biggest-data-breaches query with ranked, impact-scored breach reporting. On the enterprise-tool queries where it might have led — SIEM, endpoint — the engines routed to vendor blogs instead, a telling gap for the trade press.

Sample query: biggest data breaches 2026
What it surfaced: The Biggest Data Breaches of 2026 So Far, Ranked by Impact — cited as an editorial source on breach severity.

7. TechCrunch

The tech-news heavyweight, cited on breach reporting through its dedicated security desk. TechCrunch's running coverage of the year's worst hacks and breaches surfaced as a named editorial source. High editorial weight, but a narrow footprint in this capture — it appears on breaking-security news, not on buyer-intent product questions.

Sample query: biggest data breaches 2026
What it surfaced: Hacked, leaked, and held for ransom: The worst breaches of 2026 so far — cited on incident reporting.

8. eSecurity Planet

A dedicated cybersecurity trade publication that runs vendor-comparison and product-ranking editorial. Surfaced on the best-cybersecurity-companies query with its Top 25 franchise. One of the only security-specific trade outlets to break through against the wall of vendor content on enterprise questions.

Sample query: best cybersecurity companies 2026
What it surfaced: Top 25 Cybersecurity Companies in 2026 — cited as an independent editorial ranking against vendor "top company" pages.

9. Tom's Guide

The consumer-tech reviews outlet, cited on VPN through its best-picks franchise. Named reviewers and hands-on testing put Tom's Guide into the consumer-security answer set. Lower surface count here than its beauty- or laptop-vertical peers, but a credible tested-product voice on privacy tools.

Sample query: best VPN 2026
What it surfaced: Tom's Guide VPNs Best Picks — cited among the tested VPN buying guides.

10. Digital Trends

The consumer-tech publication rounding out the list, cited on password managers through its 2026 buying guide. Digital Trends surfaces where the buyer question is mainstream and product-comparison driven — exactly the terrain where the engines reward editor-tested "best of" content over vendor marketing.

Sample query: best password managers 2026
What it surfaced: The Best Password Managers for 2026 — cited among the tested consumer buying guides.

What This Means for Communicators

Three things from this capture.

Consumer security is a review-desk game.

Every publication in the top five earned its citations the same way: tested-product buying guides with disclosed methodology and named reviewers. TechRadar, Security.org, PCWorld, Cybernews, and AllAboutCookies don't win on brand — they win because their content is structured as direct product evaluation the engines can lift into an answer. If your security product isn't inside those tested roundups, it is invisible on the queries buyers actually type.

On enterprise questions, vendors own the answer box.

Five of the twelve queries — endpoint protection, SIEM, security awareness training, ransomware trends, and cybersecurity threats — surfaced zero qualifying independent publications. The engines filled those answers entirely with vendor blogs (SentinelOne, Huntress, Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, Commvault) and buyer-review aggregators (Gartner Peer Insights, Capterra). For B2B security marketers, the implication is stark: on your highest-value keywords, there is no editorial gatekeeper to pitch — the citation is won or lost on your own owned content and third-party comparison directories.

The trade press is not where the citations are.

The dedicated security trade titles that dominate legacy PR media lists — BleepingComputer, The Hacker News, Dark Reading, SecurityWeek, Krebs on Security, CyberScoop, CSO Online — did not surface as cited sources on a single buyer-intent query in this capture. They set the security news agenda; they are not, in this pilot, where the engines go when a buyer asks what to purchase. That is a meaningful gap between reputational prestige and citation weight.

Notable Absences

Several publications treated as category leaders in legacy security-PR media lists did not surface meaningfully in this 12-query capture: BleepingComputer, The Hacker News, Dark Reading, SecurityWeek, Krebs on Security, CyberScoop, CSO Online, Wired, and PCMag. Two reads are possible. One — the buyer-intent query set skews toward "best product" questions where these news-and-analysis outlets don't compete, and a news- or threat-intelligence query set would surface them. Two — these publications carry agenda-setting weight without carrying buyer-intent citation weight inside the engines. Either finding reframes the next 90 days of cybersecurity PR strategy: prestige placement and citation share are now separate objectives.

Methodology

Engines tested: Google Search. Future editions will expand to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.

Query set: 12 buyer-intent prompts — best antivirus software 2026; best password managers 2026; best VPN 2026; best endpoint protection 2026; best identity theft protection 2026; biggest data breaches 2026; best firewall for business; best SIEM tools 2026; best security awareness training; ransomware trends 2026; best cybersecurity companies 2026; cybersecurity threats 2026.

Window: spot capture, August 1, 2026. Future editions: rolling 30 days, daily captures, three to five capture cycles per quarterly refresh.

Definition of "cybersecurity publication": an independent editorial outlet that publishes original security news, testing, or product evaluation, with security or consumer-tech reviewing as a substantial, ongoing coverage area. Outlets must publish original editorial. Republished syndication does not qualify.

Exclusions: vendor and product blogs, the security tools' own sites, marketplaces and retailers, buyer-review aggregators and directories (G2, Gartner Peer Insights, Capterra, SoftwareReviews), personal SEO blogs, Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit.

Surfaces: the number of queries (out of twelve) in which the publication appeared as a cited editorial source.

Caveat: single-engine, twelve-query, single-cycle pilot. Five of the twelve queries returned no qualifying independent publication. The Phase 0 trend refresh will run five engines across 60-80 queries over three to five cycles in a rolling 30-day window, and will add news- and threat-intelligence queries where the security trade press is more likely to surface. Ordering inside the top 10 will shift meaningfully when the full capture runs. The composition of the list is more stable than the ordering.

Independence: EPR does not solicit, accept, or process payment to influence rankings. Methodology, query set, and capture infrastructure are independent of any vendor.
