5W and Everything-PR released The Trade Press AI Index 2026 on May 19, 2026, reporting that the top 15 domains capture 68% of consolidated AI citation share across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. The index did not run new queries. It combines six published citation studies that together cover more than 680 million citations, and it finds that specialist trade publications outperform general news within their own industries.

Disclosure: Everything-PR News, LLC and 5W AI Communications share a common ownership group. This page reports a study that 5W and Everything-PR published jointly. Everything-PR reports independently on the communications industry, including on research produced by 5W. Editorial decisions are made by Everything-PR's editorial team.

What did the Trade Press AI Index find?

The index found that AI citations are highly concentrated and that most trade publications sit outside the concentrated group. The figures below are as reported by 5W in the published report, and EPR has not re-derived them from the underlying studies.

  • The top 15 domains capture 68% of all consolidated AI citation share.
  • Forbes alone accounts for 6.93% of ChatGPT citations.
  • Reddit makes up 46.7% of Perplexity's top citations and ranks second in ChatGPT after Wikipedia.
  • LinkedIn accounts for 15% of Google AI Mode citations and more than 5% of ChatGPT's.
  • Specialist trade publications outperform general news on citations within their own vertical.

How was the index built?

The index is a synthesis, not a new measurement. 5W says it combined six published large-scale studies of large language model citations, released between August 2024 and May 2026, covering more than 680 million individual citations. The report covers ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews across nine industries, and its text also references Meta AI and Microsoft Copilot data from the underlying studies.

The nine industries were chosen from the verticals where 5W and Everything-PR work. A planned third-quarter 2026 update will add 4,500 original prompts, which is 9 industries times 100 prompts times 5 engines, to replace inferred industry rankings with measured citation share.

How much do AI engines cite media?

The share of citations that go to media varies widely by engine. 5W reports that Meta AI draws 21.5% of its citations from media, Microsoft Copilot about 17%, ChatGPT 15.4% and Gemini 5.7%, which 5W describes as the most diversified of the group.

What does the index mean for PR media lists?

The index's authors argue that the publications PR teams have pitched for years are not always the publications AI engines cite most. That is their reading, and a practical test is simple: for each engine and each category a brand cares about, list the sources the engine actually names, then compare that list with the media list the team uses today.

EPR's engine-by-engine data is in the AI Platform Citation Source Index 2026, with separate pages for ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. A related analysis of what the most-cited domains share is in what the most-cited domains in AI have in common.

What are the limits of the index?

The index inherits the limits of the studies it combines, and readers should weigh the 68% figure accordingly.

  • It is a synthesis of six studies that used different prompts, engines and dates, so the combined figures are not a single controlled measurement.
  • The 68% is pooled across topics, and the concentration in any single category can differ.
  • The industry rankings are inferred from other studies until the planned primary-source update adds measured prompts.
  • 5W and Everything-PR published the index jointly and work in the verticals it covers.
