The Perplexity Citation Source Index 2026 is Everything-PR Research's ranking of the 50 domains Perplexity cites most when assembling answers. Synthesized from six independent citation-tracking studies covering more than 680 million citations across the major AI engines, plus Evertune's 200 million-prompt analysis, Tinuiti's Q1 2026 social-citation breakdown, and the July 2025 Kai-Cheng Yang arXiv study covering 366,000 citations across 65,000 responses from the AI Search Arena evaluation platform. Perplexity is the community-engine. Reddit alone accounts for 20–24% of all Perplexity citations — the highest single-domain concentration on any AI engine. Tinuiti's January 2026 data found 31% of Perplexity's citations come from social media with Reddit dominant. Citation density is 3.4x higher than ChatGPT, with an average of 8.2 sources per answer. Brand citation rate is 13.05% versus ChatGPT's 0.59% — a 22x gap that makes Perplexity the most brand-friendly AI surface. LinkedIn citations invert ChatGPT's pattern: 59% of Perplexity LinkedIn citations come from Company Pages, not individual member posts. The strategic implications run in the opposite direction from every other engine.

1. Perplexity is the community-engine

If ChatGPT is the popularity engine and Claude is the authority engine, Perplexity is the community-engine. The structural finding across every Perplexity-specific dataset is the same: this is the AI search surface where Reddit, YouTube, and tier-1 editorial dominate, where citation density is highest, and where brand pages get cited at rates 20-plus times higher than on ChatGPT. The mechanism is architectural. Perplexity uses a three-layer ML reranking system that structurally favors earned media from tier-1 publications, augmented by real-time retrieval that surfaces fresh Reddit threads within 24 hours.

The asymmetry is not subtle. Only 11% of domains cited by ChatGPT are also cited by Perplexity. A brand visible on ChatGPT can be completely invisible on Perplexity — and the reverse is just as common. The optimization patterns are genuinely different: ChatGPT preferentially cites Wikipedia (~47.9% of top citations) and authoritative editorial. Perplexity preferentially cites Reddit (~46.7% of top citations in one published analysis) and recent content. The same brand can rank 18 of 25 queries on ChatGPT and 2 of 25 on Perplexity, with no content changes — purely a function of where the citation surface looks.

This matters because Perplexity is now a meaningful distribution channel. The platform passed 230 million monthly active users in Q1 2026 and reported processing 780 million queries in May 2025, growing 20% month-over-month. CEO Aravind Srinivas has targeted one billion queries per week. Perplexity-referred traffic converts at 3.1x the rate of standard Google organic, and average revenue per Perplexity-referred session is £94 for UK B2B SaaS — higher than ChatGPT's £68. The buyers are real, the conversion is real, and the playbook is different.

This Index is a synthesis of independent third-party citation data, weighted toward Perplexity-specific datasets. Source studies:

  • Profound longitudinal citation study (August 2024 – October 2025): 680 million citations across major AI engines, including the Perplexity subset.
  • Evertune 200 million-prompt analysis (five-month window): Reddit's ~20% concentration on Perplexity, single-domain ceiling rarely above 5%.
  • Tinuiti Q1 2026 social-citation breakdown: 31% of Perplexity citations from social media, Reddit dominant. ChatGPT 5%+. Gemini 0.1%.

Consolidation logic: where studies disagree on rank inside the top 50, this Index favors larger sample size and engine-specific data over multi-engine aggregates. Where studies disagree on attribution (e.g., where to credit a Reddit thread on a brand page), this Index uses the functional category most useful to operator decision-making.

Volatility caveat: Perplexity's real-time retrieval makes its long tail more volatile than ChatGPT's or Claude's. Top-10 positions are stable; positions 20–50 reflect 30-day rolling churn driven by news cycle and trending Reddit thread velocity. This Index will be reissued quarterly.

4. Category leaders inside Perplexity

4.1 Community & UGC — Reddit

Reddit is not the #2 source on Perplexity. It is the #1 source by a margin that exceeds Wikipedia's lead on any other engine. The 20–24% citation share is structural, not seasonal. Perplexity's real-time retrieval surfaces Reddit threads within 24 hours of posting, and the citation depth means brands need to be present in the discussion, not adjacent to it. 99% of Reddit citations point to specific threads, not subreddit homepages or brand profiles.

4.2 Encyclopedic & Reference — Wikipedia + YouTube

Wikipedia and YouTube fill the reference and video citation roles. YouTube earns roughly the same citation share on Perplexity as on Gemini for video-relevant queries, with transcript and chapter-marker extraction working the same way.

4.3 Editorial & News — Reuters, NYT, Bloomberg, WaPo

The Yang arXiv study confirmed Perplexity's structural preference for tier-1 journalism — Reuters, NYT, Bloomberg, Washington Post, FT, BBC, Guardian, AP. The three-layer ML reranking system is calibrated to surface earned media. This is the engine where high-tier press placements deliver direct AI visibility lift.

4.4 Professional — LinkedIn (Company Pages)

Perplexity is the only major AI engine where LinkedIn Company Page citations outpace individual member posts (59/41 split versus 41/59 on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode). For B2B brands, Perplexity rewards the brand-page editorial cadence that ChatGPT effectively ignores.

4.5 Health, Finance, Policy — .gov and .edu over-index

Perplexity over-indexes on government and academic domains for queries in health, finance, science, and policy. NIH, CDC, SEC, Federal Reserve, and university .edu domains appear at higher relative rates than on ChatGPT. The pattern matters most for regulated industries where authoritative citations are the operating environment.

4.6 B2B Review — G2, Capterra, Gartner

Software evaluation queries on Perplexity route through G2, Capterra, and tier-1 analyst research. The B2B citation pathway is structured review content plus high-tier analyst report citation. This is the engine where SaaS comparison strategy delivers measurable AI visibility lift inside one quarter.

5. Four structural findings

Finding 1. Perplexity is the brand-citation engine. The 13.05% brand citation rate (versus ChatGPT's 0.59%) is the largest measured asymmetry across any pair of major AI engines. Brands that get cited at all in AI answers get cited 22x more often on Perplexity. For any brand running a measurable AI visibility program, Perplexity is the surface where the dollars-and-cents return shows up first.

Finding 2. Reddit is not optional on Perplexity. 20–24% citation share means roughly one in five of every Perplexity answer's citations trace back to a Reddit thread. Brands without a category Reddit strategy are conceding 20% of the citation surface before the editorial cluster competes for the rest. The 99% thread-level concentration (versus subreddit-level or profile-level) means generic subreddit presence is not the lever — being inside specific buyer-decision threads is.

Finding 3. LinkedIn Company Page strategy is Perplexity-specific. Every other major engine over-indexes on individual member content. Perplexity inverts. For B2B brands, this is one of the rare optimization wedges where the playbook changes by engine — and where Perplexity's 5.3% LinkedIn citation rate is concentrated on the surface a brand controls directly.

Finding 4. Tier-1 earned media compounds on Perplexity faster than anywhere else. The three-layer ML reranking system surfaces Reuters, NYT, Bloomberg, WaPo, and the FT at rates higher than their ChatGPT share. The Muck Rack Generative Pulse report finding that 84% of AI citations come from earned media is most visible on Perplexity. Press placements convert to AI citations within the 24-hour to 7-day post-publication window.

6. What to do

  1. Audit your top-15 Perplexity source presence first. Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube, LinkedIn (Company Page), Reuters, NYT, Bloomberg, WaPo, Guardian, BBC, Forbes, Business Insider, CNBC, WSJ, NIH. If you cannot account for verified presence on at least 8 of these, Perplexity visibility is structurally out of reach.
  2. Build a category-specific Reddit strategy targeting the threads buyers actually read. Map the top 5 buyer-decision subreddits in your category. Identify the recurring threads where competitors are discussed. Contribute substantive, named-entity, experience-backed responses. The unit of work is the thread, not the subreddit.
  3. Treat your LinkedIn Company Page as a Perplexity surface. Long-form structured posts, dated thought leadership, executive-quoted brand pages. The 59% Company Page citation share is concentrated on content the brand directly controls.
  4. Pitch tier-1 earned media with first-party data. Reuters, NYT, Bloomberg, WaPo, FT, Economist, BBC, Guardian, AP. The Yang arXiv study confirmed Perplexity's preference for tier-1 over contributor-network. Forbes contributor placements deliver more on ChatGPT; tier-1 reported pieces deliver more on Perplexity.
  5. Run a 90-day citation density test. Perplexity averages 8.2 cited sources per answer versus ChatGPT's lower density. The competitive surface is wider but also more crowded. Track citation share across the top 30 buyer-intent queries weekly.
  6. For B2B brands, build G2 and Capterra category presence. SaaS comparison queries route here. Profile completeness, recent customer reviews, and updated category positioning are direct citation levers.
  7. For regulated industries, build a .gov / .edu co-citation strategy. Healthcare, financial services, energy, and policy brands earn higher Perplexity share by citing primary government and academic sources in their own content. The co-citation effect compounds.
