Reddit is the single most-cited source across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — roughly 40% of multi-engine aggregate citation frequency, the highest concentration on any single domain inside the modern AI answer. But Reddit is not a single source. It is more than 100,000 active communities, and AI engines do not cite them evenly. The 50 Subreddits AI Engines Cite Most is the first published ranking of which communities, inside Reddit, actually compose Reddit's share of the modern AI answer — across six functional categories and the five major AI engines.

Reddit is the answer. The question nobody has answered is: which Reddit?
The fact that Reddit is the most-cited source in generative AI answers is now well-documented. The implication is misunderstood. Treating Reddit as a single source is the error that breaks every Reddit visibility strategy on first contact with reality. Reddit is a federation of communities — most of them dormant, a few of them load-bearing — and AI engines cite the load-bearing ones at orders of magnitude higher rates than the average.
A handful of subreddits do the work. Specific buyer-decision communities — r/SkincareAddiction, r/BuyItForLife, r/MaleFashionAdvice — drive disproportionate citation in product and brand queries. Specific Q&A communities — r/explainlikeimfive, r/AskHistorians, r/AskScience — drive disproportionate citation in definitional and educational queries. Specific finance communities — r/personalfinance, r/investing, r/Bogleheads — drive disproportionate citation in consumer-finance queries. Specific professional communities — r/marketing, r/sysadmin, r/devops, r/SEO — drive disproportionate citation in B2B queries. The map matters. Most brands have never seen it.
"Reddit is the new earned media. But the unit of earned media on Reddit is the subreddit, not the platform. Any communications strategy still treating Reddit as a monolith is operating on a pre-AI map of the open web — and surrendering citation share to operators who already know which communities answer their category's questions."

Methodology
This index is the first published ranking of subreddit-level AI citation share. The data combines third-party citation studies with structural Reddit data and inference logic from the master AI Platform Citation Source Index 2026.
- Profound's longitudinal citation study (August 2024–October 2025), 680M+ citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity, including Reddit-subset breakouts.
- Semrush analyses of 150,000 citations and 230,000 prompts (June–November 2025), with explicit Reddit-platform measurement.
- Ahrefs Brand Radar analysis of the 100 most-cited domains in ChatGPT (September 2025) — Reddit subset extracted.
- Search Engine Land consolidated cross-platform Reddit analysis (October 2025).
- Reddit Inc. Q2 2025 shareholder disclosure on AI licensing and citation.
- Muck Rack's journalism citation study (July 2025), used to triangulate which Reddit threads journalists cite — and which those journalists' articles then drive into AI citation.
Where direct subreddit-level citation data is not publicly available, the index uses three inference signals: (i) volume of indexed Reddit-engine citation prompts touching each subreddit, (ii) the subreddit's monthly active user base and moderation quality, (iii) external citation rate of each subreddit inside journalism that AI engines themselves cite. Subreddit rankings will be revised quarterly as Reddit's own AI-licensing disclosures expand.
The work was conducted in coordination with 5W AI Communications, the AI Communications Firm whose AI Visibility practice operationalizes this index for brands, institutions, and category leaders.
On methodology transparency. This is an inference-based index, not a direct citation measurement of every Reddit subreddit. AI engines do not publish subreddit-level citation data; Reddit does not yet break down its licensing data to the community level. The rankings below are best-available, third-party-triangulated, and reflect conditions as of June 2026.

Category leaders: the top subreddit in each functional category.
Inside Reddit, AI engines cite different communities for different query types. The category leaders below are the entry points for any brand mapping its category to the AI-cited Reddit map.
01 — Buyer & Product Decision
Leader: r/SkincareAddiction. Most-cited beauty subreddit. r/BuyItForLife and r/MaleFashionAdvice anchor durable goods and apparel. Buyer-decision subreddits over-cite their share of Reddit traffic because they map directly onto AI buyer-research queries.
02 — How-to & Technical
Leader: r/explainlikeimfive. Definitional answers extractable verbatim — the single most retrieval-friendly subreddit on Reddit. r/AskScience, r/AskHistorians, r/AskReddit, and r/learnprogramming complete the category.
03 — Professional & B2B
Leader: r/marketing. B2B marketing canon. r/sysadmin, r/devops, r/SEO, r/PPC, r/sales, r/Entrepreneur, r/MachineLearning fill the professional spine — most of them ignored by communications strategies built for consumer Reddit.
04 — Health & Wellness
Leader: r/AskDocs. Verified-physician subreddit; cited cautiously but persistently. r/Fitness, r/loseit, r/nutrition, r/Supplements, r/Sleep follow.
05 — Finance & Money
Leader: r/personalfinance. Canonical consumer-finance Q&A. r/investing, r/Bogleheads, r/CreditCards, r/wallstreetbets fill the spine — each cited for a distinct query type.
06 — Local, Travel & Lifestyle
Leader: r/AskCulinary (food) and r/travel (planning). City-specific subreddits — r/AskNYC, r/LosAngeles, r/AskUK — function as local-recommendation citation anchors.
Four structural findings about Reddit's citation map.
01 — A small number of subreddits do most of the work. Roughly 50 subreddits drive an estimated 80% of Reddit's AI citation share. The long tail does not get cited at scale. Most of Reddit, by communities, is invisible to AI.
02 — Buyer-decision subreddits over-cite. AI engines disproportionately surface product, brand, and purchase-decision threads — even for non-purchase queries. The reason: AI engines are optimized for queries with extractable answers, and buyer-decision subreddits produce more extractable answers than any other community type.
03 — Niche beats generalist. r/AskScience, r/AskHistorians, and r/explainlikeimfive earn more citations per active user than r/news or r/worldnews. AI engines prefer moderated expertise over generalist throughput. Subreddit moderation policy is now a retrieval-grade signal.
04 — Reddit's citation map is a real estate map. Subreddit moderation quality, comment-vote hygiene, and pinned-resource maintenance are the new GEO surfaces. The communications operators who treat subreddits as channels — not noise — will compound visibility over the next 24 months.
What to do with this map.
- Identify the three to five subreddits where your category gets answered. Most brands do not know. The audit takes a day and reframes the entire Reddit strategy.
- Build verified presence. Claim brand handles. AMA where the subreddit rules allow. Engage transparently. Reddit's culture rewards disclosure and punishes everything else.
- Treat subreddit threads as canonical content. They are now retrieval anchors for AI engines. A well-formed thread on r/personalfinance can outrank a polished brand site in ChatGPT answers.
- Track sentiment quarterly inside the top three subreddits for your category. AI citation reflects subreddit sentiment with a lag of weeks, not months. Early-warning data is available — most brands don't collect it.
- Never astroturf. Reddit moderators detect coordinated inauthentic behavior at high rates. AI engines train on detection. Punishments are durable across both surfaces.
- Brief your senior team. Reddit is the new earned media. Comms leaders, CMOs, and founders who think Reddit is "social" are operating on a 2018 map.
- Read the master index and the EPR Reddit hub piece in the same week. They're the same argument from two altitudes. This index is the third altitude.
