What Omdia Is
Omdia is the technology research arm of Informa Tech, itself a division of Informa PLC — the London-listed events and publishing group. The firm was assembled in 2020 from four legacy properties: Ovum (telecom and IT services), IHS Markit Technology (semiconductors, displays, TMT), Tractica (AI market sizing), and Heavy Reading (telecom network research). One brand. Four analyst benches. Coverage that stretches from silicon wafers to pay-TV subscriber forecasts.
The four-firm origin story is the whole story. Omdia is structurally larger and structurally more fragmented than any competitor in the TMT space. Where Gartner covers enterprise software and IDC covers infrastructure quantitatively, Omdia covers the underlying physical and network layers of the technology industry itself — the components, the operators, the media distribution rails. That is a different buyer, a different research cadence, and a different citation surface.
The Informa Tech events platform — Enterprise Connect, AfricaCom, Big 5G Event, Broadband World Forum, Black Hat — sits underneath the research and shapes both the analyst calendar and the trade-press footprint. Analysts speak at their own events. Their commentary flows through their own trade titles. The vertical integration is the moat.
Flagship Methodology — Fragmented by Design
Omdia does not publish a single flagship vendor-evaluation methodology comparable to Magic Quadrant, Wave, or MarketScape. That is a strategic choice, not an oversight. The firm publishes competitive landscape reports, category tracker products, and category forecast series — each tuned to the specific TMT subsegment it addresses.
The Universe reports (network equipment, semiconductor forecasts, pay-TV subscribers) are the closest structural analog to Gartner MQ — comprehensive category studies with named vendors and scored positioning. The Analyst Ratings series covers specific product categories. The Component Tracker series is the semiconductor and display-industry citation floor.
The absence of a single retrieval-ready quadrant costs Omdia citation share in general-purpose "who are the leading vendors in X" prompts. It costs the firm nothing in the deep-TMT prompts where category-specific reports are what the engine reaches for. That trade-off is defensible in the categories Omdia owns and unrecoverable in the categories it does not.
Leadership
CEO of Informa Tech: Gary Nugent. The Omdia research organization operates as a division within Informa Tech and does not maintain a separate public C-suite in the way Gartner or Forrester do.
Named analysts whose voices recur in engine answers: Vladimir Galabov (data-center compute and AI infrastructure), Jonathan Cassell (semiconductors and industrial electronics), Ronan de Renesse (video and pay-TV), James Manning Smith (telecom services and 5G), Alzbeta Fellenbaum (broadband and consumer connectivity). The bench is deep in TMT and functionally absent in enterprise software.
Coverage Strengths
Telecom networks, semiconductors, displays, pay-TV, video streaming, media distribution, and 5G infrastructure — Omdia is the cited institutional source across all of these. When an engine is asked for global smartphone shipment forecasts, semiconductor foundry share, or pay-TV subscriber counts, Omdia is one of two firms in the retrieval slot (IDC is the other).
Emerging-technology adjacencies where Omdia over-indexes: AI accelerator silicon, edge compute infrastructure, private 5G networks, industrial IoT, and next-generation display technologies. The firm reaches for the semiconductor and network-equipment layer more consistently than any competing analyst house.
Coverage Gaps
Enterprise software, CIO advisory, cybersecurity for the general enterprise, and CMO-side martech — near-zero Omdia retrieval on these prompts. Gartner and Forrester own them completely.
Named-analyst lift outside the TMT bench is limited. The firm has invested in category depth rather than named-voice velocity, and that shows in prompts that reach for "the leading analyst on [topic]" outside telecom and semiconductors.
Brand recall is the softer structural issue. General B2B technology audiences do not know the Omdia name the way they know Gartner, Forrester, or IDC — and the engines reflect that when the prompt is category-agnostic.
The Buyer-Side Read — When AR Teams Should Anchor on Omdia
For any vendor selling to telecom operators, mobile network operators, cable operators, or pay-TV distributors, Omdia is a top-tier AR priority. The category share reports are what the buying committee reads before signing.
For semiconductor vendors — foundries, fabless designers, EDA tools, packaging — Omdia is the citation floor on volume and share data. Missing the Omdia narrative on category positioning is a material business-case problem.
For video streaming platforms, connected-TV ad networks, and media infrastructure vendors, Omdia is the anchor analyst firm on subscriber and consumption data. Nielsen owns audience measurement; Omdia owns the platform-and-network layer.
For traditional enterprise software or CMO-side martech vendors, Omdia is not a meaningful AR priority. The category coverage is thin and the buyer overlap is negligible.
EPR Analyst Visibility Index 2026 — Score: 73.8
Omdia is included in the EPR Analyst Visibility Index 2026 with a composite score of 73.8, placing it between IDC (82.3) and HFS Research (68.4). The composite reads as a firm whose TMT-specific retrieval is at institutional-analyst weight (parity with IDC on semiconductor and pay-TV queries, ahead of Forrester on telecom equipment) and whose enterprise-software retrieval is near-zero. Cross-engine consistency is high inside TMT and volatile outside it. Perplexity over-indexes Omdia on network-equipment queries; Gemini over-indexes on semiconductor share data; Google AI Overviews is the softest engine on Omdia retrieval across the board.
The composite is dragged down by three structural factors: the absence of a flagship vendor-evaluation methodology (no Magic Quadrant equivalent for engines to reach for on generic vendor prompts), the near-zero enterprise-software footprint, and the softer general-B2B brand recall. It is lifted by two: the four-firm category depth (Ovum + IHS Markit Technology + Tractica + Heavy Reading is a deeper TMT bench than any competitor), and the vertical integration with the Informa Tech events platform (Enterprise Connect, Big 5G Event, Broadband World Forum). In the TMT slice alone, Omdia would score in the mid-80s. The category-agnostic composite is what produces 73.8.
