Tsinghua SEM Is Structurally Depressed by English-Language Citation Bias

Tsinghua SEM ranked #8 (81.0) in the 5W AI Business School Index 2026 — the highest non-US school. Under Chinese-engine normalization, estimated #4–5 globally.

The English-Language Bias

Dimension 6 — AI Citation Share — models how often each school is cited when AI engines answer questions about business education. The measurement runs 3,000 prompts across five engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) over four monthly waves. Those five engines are English-language dominant. Tsinghua publishes extensively in Mandarin. Its domestic visibility operates on Baidu, WeChat, and Zhihu.

What Normalization Shows

Under a normalized model accounting for Chinese-engine citation patterns — extrapolated from Baidu and Doubao sampling — Tsinghua SEM's estimated position rises to #4–5, between Wharton (90.5) and HBS (89.0).

Peking Guanghua — The Same Problem

Peking Guanghua (#18, 72.5) faces the same bias. Its founder pipeline intersects with Baidu, ByteDance, Alibaba, and Tencent. Under normalization, Guanghua likely sits 5–8 positions higher.

A GEO Problem

Citation Share is a measure of structural position inside retrieval systems — not quality. This is the core problem Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) addresses. Chinese institutions face a GEO challenge their English-language peers do not.
