Automotive Digital Marketing Case Studies: 7 Campaigns

Automotive digital marketing case studies with documented results share one habit: the brand picked a result it could count and reported it. Deutsch reported 13 million YouTube views for Volkswagen's The Force before it aired on television, Ford told The Drive its Bronco reveal drew more than 150,000 reservations in 18 days, and TBWA Switzerland reported reaching Tesla drivers for CHF 10,000. Seven campaigns follow, each with sourced figures.

How do the seven campaigns compare?

The seven campaigns span 2001 to 2024, and each has at least one figure reported by a named outlet or the brand itself.

What did Volkswagen's The Force prove about pre-release?

Volkswagen's The Force proved that a Super Bowl spot can build its audience on YouTube before the game. Deutsch LA and MediaCom released the Passat ad at 10 p.m. on the Wednesday before the February 6, 2011 game, a move Adweek's 2018 retrospective called unheard of at the time.

Deutsch's awards entry reports more than 13 million YouTube views before the spot aired on television. A Deutsch executive told Adweek the figure was 17 million by the time it aired, so sources differ on the exact count. Kantar tracked 195 online placements of the ad, and Ad Age reported that The Force and Volkswagen's second spot, Black Beetle, earned more than $600,000 in free media in the days after the game. Volkswagen of America later cited more than 55 million YouTube views.

Adweek reports that releasing spots before the game became regular practice for marketers after 2011. The 25 best automotive marketing campaigns list places The Force among the category's defining spots.

What did BMW Films prove about owned video?

BMW Films proved that a carmaker could build an audience on its own website with entertainment instead of advertising. BMW launched The Hire in April 2001 on bmwfilms.com, and the series grew to eight short films directed by filmmakers including John Woo, Ang Lee, John Frankenheimer, Tony Scott, Guy Ritchie and Joe Carnahan, according to Just Auto.

Jalopnik reports that the first five films were viewed about 11 million times in 2001, and BMWblog reports that 2 million people registered on the site. BMW later told Automotive News Europe that episodes had been downloaded more than 75 million times. Jalopnik credits the series with aiding BMW sales growth of 12.5 percent from 2000 to 2001. The series ran alongside other BMW marketing, so the sales figure shows timing, not proof of cause.

FilmStories reports that BMW removed the films from its site in October 2005. EPR's look at BMW's storytelling strategy covers how the brand's narrative approach developed afterward.

Why did Volvo Trucks' Epic Split work for a B2B product?

The Epic Split worked because it demonstrated one technical feature, Volvo Dynamic Steering, in a stunt that people who will never buy a truck shared too. Forsman & Bodenfors released the film on November 14, 2013, with Jean-Claude Van Damme performing a split between two reversing trucks, and The One Club named it Best of Show in 2014.

Volvo Trucks reported in 2013 that the film passed 60 million views, 6 million social shares and 10 million Google impressions, and valued the coverage at nearly $100 million. That valuation is Volvo's own calculation. Fast Company reported that the full Live Tests series generated more than 100 million YouTube views and nearly 8 million shares between June 2012 and May 2014. The Drum later reported more than 114 million views on the film itself.

How did Ford turn a reveal into 150,000 reservations?

Ford turned the Bronco reveal into 150,000 reservations by opening a $100 refundable reservation at the moment three custom films aired. Organizers cancelled the 2020 Detroit auto show, TechCrunch reported, so Ford moved the reveal to Disney's networks. At 8 p.m. ET on July 13, 2020, three 3-minute films ran on ABC, ESPN and National Geographic, which Ford called the first prime-time product reveal across Disney's broadcast, cable, digital and streaming properties.

Ford confirmed to The Drive on July 31, 2020 that it had received more than 150,000 reservations, 18 days after the reveal. Ford CFO John Lawler said in October 2020 that the total was nearly 190,000, according to CNBC. The Drive noted that Ford still had to learn how many deposits would convert into orders, so reservations measure demand, not sales.

What does Porsche's Tesla Targeting show about audience data?

Porsche's Tesla Targeting shows that a small budget can reach a narrow audience when an ad can be matched to a device. TBWA Switzerland noticed that a Tesla's dashboard screen has a specific size and operating system, so it served Taycan banners that could play only on Tesla screens, according to The Media Leader. About 20,000 Teslas were on Swiss roads, and the agency's AdForum entry puts Tesla's share of electric cars in Switzerland at 50 percent.

The same entry says the campaign ran from September 1 to 30, 2021 on a budget of CHF 10,000. Merca2.0 reports 27,668 impressions and 135 clicks, which works out to a click-through rate of about 0.5 percent (an EPR calculation from the two reported figures). The agency says click-through more than doubled the industry standard for automotive display banners in the first week. These figures come from the agency and the brand, not from an independent audit.

What does Tesla's referral program show about incentive costs?

Tesla's referral program shows that an owner incentive channel can grow expensive enough that a brand with strong demand cuts it. Kelley Blue Book reports that top referrers were once eligible for a free Roadster, Electrek reports that Tesla reduced the prizes in 2019, and Tesla ended vehicle referral awards on September 18, 2021.

Drive Tesla Canada reported in 2021 that referral costs had reached more than $23 million in the first quarter of 2021 alone. Tesla's support page says a smaller program ran from March 27, 2023 to April 30, 2024, and Electrek reported that Tesla shut it down in all markets on that date.

What did Subaru's The Big Night add to interactive video?

Subaru's The Big Night added a branching film in which viewers steer a Forester driver through the story without on-screen buttons. Japanese agency ADK and Great Guns Interactive built it with 172 film segments and 40 possible endings, according to Campaign Brief Asia, and shot the interactive moments in camera as part of the film's world, LBB reported.

The sources found for this article report production scale, not sales or engagement results, so the film is a format reference, not a performance case.

What do these automotive case studies have in common?

The seven automotive case studies share three moves: a result the brand could count, content built to be shared, and a cost the brand could cap or had to cut.

Pick the countable result before launch. Ford's reservation count gave the company a demand number to plan against, and BMW's 2 million registrations were people who had signed up on its own site. Why it works: a reservation or a registration is a recorded action by a named person, while a view count only shows that a video loaded. The Drive (July 31, 2020) reported that Ford's next task was converting deposits into orders, which is possible only because the deposits were counted.

Build the asset to travel without paid media. Volvo Trucks reported 6 million social shares of the Epic Split, and Fast Company reported nearly 8 million shares across the Live Tests series. Why it works: each share puts the film in front of viewers who were not in the paid audience, so the distribution cost per viewer falls as shares rise.

Watch the cost of any incentive channel. Porsche spent CHF 10,000, while Tesla's referral costs passed $23 million in a single quarter before the program ended. Why it works: an incentive paid per referral grows with success, so a program without a cap becomes more expensive exactly when it works best (Drive Tesla Canada, 2021).

How do automotive campaigns reach AI answers?

AI engines answering car questions cite third-party publications more often than campaign sites. EPR's automotive AI citation share study covered 28 brands, five engines and 64 prompts and found Toyota leading on reliability and Tesla owning the electric vehicle default. EPR's list of the automotive publications AI engines cite most names Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, Consumer Reports, Cars.com, Motoring Research and InsideEVs, so a campaign that earns coverage in those outlets leaves a trail the engines can cite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which automotive digital campaign has the largest reach?

Volvo Trucks' Epic Split has the largest reported view count of the seven, with The Drum reporting more than 114 million YouTube views in 2022.

Do these campaigns prove that digital marketing sells cars?

No. Jalopnik credits The Hire with aiding a 12.5 percent BMW sales rise from 2000 to 2001, but the series ran alongside other marketing. Ford's 150,000 Bronco reservations measured demand, and The Drive noted that conversion to orders was still unknown.

How much did Porsche's Tesla Targeting campaign cost?

The agency's AdForum entry reports a budget of CHF 10,000 for September 2021, and Merca2.0 reports 27,668 impressions and 135 clicks.

What should a carmaker measure in a digital campaign?

Measure an action by a named person, such as a registration, a reservation or a click, and report it with the date and the source. The campaigns above that did this are the ones with figures other outlets could cite.
