Bronx Science – The Most Successful Graduates in the 1990s
The Bronx High School of Science, commonly known as Bronx Science is one of the top high schools in New York City. It is a public school, but students must take a test to gain admittance.Reportedly over 20,000 students test each year to be accepted. And with a reputation like Bronx Science has, that is understandable.
Bronx Science has 8 Nobel Prize winners and 6 Pulitzer Prize winners among its graduates.
Bronx Science does not just accept students interested in hard sciences, but also in humanities and social sciences. It also receives students whose interests run parallel to science, but not specifically in one of the sciences. Among those graduating in the 1990’s some have already become quite successful.
Mark Boal – graduated in 1991. Boal is a writer, screenwriter, and film producer. He started as a journalist where he wrote for such magazines as Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, Playboy and Salon. In 2004, he wrote an article called “Death and Dishonor” which was adapted into a screenplay that he co-wrote and became the movie In the Valley of Elah.
Perhaps his best-known efforts though are as screenwriter and producer of The Hurt Locker, which he won the 2009 Academy Awards for Original Screenplay and Best Picture. Also he was the screenwriter and producer of Zero Dark Thirty, which received a 2012 Academy Award nomination for Original Screenplay.
James Kyson Lee (James Kyson) – graduated in 1993. He was born in South Korea and moved to New York City with his family when he was 10 years old. He is an actor and so far, his most-recognized role has been in an NBC television series, Heroes from 2006 through 2010.
He has made guest appearances on many shows including JAG, CSI, Justified, and Hawaii 5-0. He is scheduled to be appearing in a new television series, Daybreak, from the producers of 24 and Touch.
James is an active member of the Global Green campaign and the Creative Coalition.
Wolf Wigo – graduated in 1991. Wigo is a renowned water polo player and coach. He led his Stanford team to two NCAA championships. He played for the U.S team in the Olympics in 1996, 2000, and 2004. In the 2000 Olympics, he led the team in goals and was captain of the team from 2001 through 2004.
He returned to the Olympics in both 2008 and 2012 as the NBC Sports Analyst for water polo. He currently resides in Santa Barbara, California with his family where he is the coach of the UCSB’s women’s water polo team.
Phil Libin – graduated in 1989. Though Libin didn’t graduate in the 1990’s, he was a schoolmate of the others listed here, so he’s included. Libin was born in Russia but moved with his family to America when he was eight years old.
Libin founded and sold a couple of tech-related companies, CoreStreet and Engine 5, before becoming the CEO of Evernote. Both of the previous companies were sold for several million dollars, Engine 5 going for a reported $26 million. Evernote is a Silicon Valley based company and well-known in the Internet, tech and writing circles.
Though Bronx Science may imply a totally science-related student body, they seem to have alumni in all fields. Their alumni are successful in sports, business, performing arts, fine arts, public service, writing, engineering, and physics. This is a strong group to be able to hang your hat beside no matter what your field of expertise.
