Semilof began his journey in the business world began when he was 21 after he left Boston University, starting out working for Innovex Mortgage, in advertising. He left after two years to work in the high-net-worth division of Morgan Stanley. He became acquainted with Bill Bradford there and later helped him liquidate Circle Media in a $68 million deal. The two then partnered up to form ValueSearch, a college magazine, which ultimately grew to cover 15 campuses in the U.S. The partnership eventually added grocery store billboards to their holdings (4,500 of them), later selling them for $2.5 million to Earthlink.
