Israel to Welcome World Championship of Flag Football

IFAF logoThe International Federation of American Football (IFAF) tournament is expected to bring together about 30 teams from some 20 countries for the World Championship of Flag Football to be held in Jerusalem, Israel from August 13 – August 15, 2014.

The IFAF Flag Football World Championship has been held since 2002 and is the showpiece event for senior nation l teams competing in 5-on-5 flag football with separate competitions for men and women. The teams will be split into group play on the first two days of the tournament and the placement and medal games will be played on Friday, August 15th.

The IFAF Senior Flag World Championship is held every two years, and the expectation is that the 7th installment will be the biggest to date. The Host organization of the Israel event is ‘American Football in Israel’ which is the official American Football Federation in the State of Israel. The main game fields are the AFI’s own Kraft Family Stadium and the Hebrew University Stadium on the Givat Ram Campus. Jerusalem’s Ramada Hotel will house the expected 400 visiting players, coaches, referees and international football officials.

“Jerusalem is among the most historic and exciting cities in the world and for us it’s a dream come true to bring the IFAF Championship to the Capital city of Israel,” said AFI President Steve Leibowitz. “I know that we have great facilities for football and players from around the world will also have an opportunity to visit the Holy Land.

University of Michigan quarterback Alex Swieca will lead the Israel National Team in August. “I am very excited and honored to represent Israel in the World Championships. Israel holds a very strong place in my heart and this is an incredible opportunity to make Israel proud. I look forward to using the skills that I have developed in Michigan to help my team win.” (Alex Swieca is the son of noted hedge-funder Henry Swieca).
