Elizabeth Woolridge Grant was born in Manhattan on June 21, 1985 and raised in Lake Placid, New York. She is one of the only major pop figures of the 2010s whose brand is the aesthetic itself rather than the artist persona behind it — vintage Hollywood Americana, cinematic melancholy, the "gangsta Nancy Sinatra" framing she used in early interviews that became the entire industry's frame for the project.

Grant released her first album under her own name — Lana Del Ray A.K.A. Lizzy Grant — in January 2010 via 5 Points Records. It was pulled from sale within months. The reinvention as "Lana Del Rey" — borrowed from a Ford Del Rey and a vintage actress aesthetic — became the foundational brand move.

SNL January 2012

The single most discussed PR event of her career was the negative one. Del Rey's January 14, 2012 Saturday Night Live debut, performing "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans," was widely panned as nervous and stiff. Brian Williams reportedly emailed a journalist calling it one of the worst musical performances in SNL history. The clip became a national story for two weeks. The Williams email leaked.

Most artists would have repositioned. Del Rey did not. The crisis became part of the brand — a refusal-of-conventional-pop-star-polish posture that aligned with the album's melancholy and reinforced the authenticity argument. Born to Die shipped two weeks later and sold 77,000 U.S. copies in its first week.

The Jack Antonoff collaboration began here and has continued through every record since. Chemtrails Over the Country Club (2021) — the first country-leaning record. Blue Banisters (2021). Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd (2023) — Grammy nomination for Album of the Year, lost to Taylor Swift's Midnights.

Norman Fucking Rockwell! is the critical-prestige pivot. It won her institutional credibility she did not have in the Born to Die era and reset the conversation from "polarizing pop figure" to "generational songwriter."

Stove drops 2026

At the 2024 Billboard x NMPA Songwriter Awards, Del Rey said "the music business is going country" and confirmed she was working on a country album then titled Lasso, per The FADER. The album cycled through three titles — Lasso, The Right Person Will Stay, and finally Stove — with release dates pushed from September 2024 to May 2025 to May 2026. Consistent with delayed rollouts on her previous three albums.

Singles so far: "Henry, Come On" (April 11, 2025), "Bluebird" (April 18, 2025), and "White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter" (February 17, 2026). The collaborator stack includes Jack Antonoff, Nashville's Luke Laird (Eric Church, Kacey Musgraves), and Drew Erickson, per Variety.

Del Rey headlined the Stagecoach country-music festival in Indio, California in April 2025 — a remarkable booking for an artist whose country album had not yet been released. She debuted three new tracks: "Stars Fell on Alabama," "Quiet in the South," and "57.5."

The country pivot is not a reinvention. It is a category extension consistent with the Americana visual identity she has run since 2012. The aesthetic was already there. The genre just caught up.

Instagram only

Del Rey conducts almost all of her direct fan communication through Instagram — most often via long voice memos, hand-written captions, and image-only posts. Press appearances are deliberate and sparse. The owned channel does the work conventional digital marketing deploys across multiple platforms.

Photographer Neil Krug has shot most of her major album campaigns. The visual language compounds because the same eye is rendering it.

The 2020 "Question for the Culture" Instagram post — referencing Beyoncé, Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and other women of color — became a multi-cycle press conversation. Del Rey did not retreat from the position, did not delete the post, and did not formally apologize. The brand absorbed the controversy and continued.

Married a Louisiana gator guide

In September 2024, Del Rey married Jeremy Dufrene, an alligator-tour guide from Des Allemands, Louisiana, whom she had first met on a swamp tour in 2019, per W Magazine. The wedding was small. Her father, Robert Grant, walked her down the aisle. The officiant was Churchome pastor Judah Smith.

The Louisiana relocation is consistent with the country pivot, with the Americana visual identity, and with a decade of references to the South in her catalog. Even the personal life moves stay inside the brand.

Aesthetic anchors, persona shifts

Del Rey's brand runs three disciplines most major pop figures break inside their first five years. One aesthetic, fifteen years — the Americana / vintage-Hollywood visual identity has not moved since 2011; genre has expanded, identity has not. Almost zero traditional press cycles — Instagram, the music itself, and the visual collaborators carry the load.
